Do you think you're talented?

Ditto. I don't think I'm as talented as I am obsessed... or tenacious. I can't. I won't... and I don't stop.

I think it's OCD that sometimes gets mistaken for talent.

Kind of how they used to describe Ferdinand Porsche: A man whose eccentricity was frequently mistaken for genius.

thats what i ment to say..... thanks SM.

It depends entirely on when you ask me the question. Before or after I've seen the footage I've just shot.

Before: I'm like Kanye West at an awards show.

After: I stop eating for a week or two.

I tend to be very very happy when my ideas aren't those definitive ones and zeroes. Thus, I'm much more productive when I'm unproductive. I envy painters a lot.

It's funny how your perspective on yourself changes. I was going through some old stuff last night and pulled out the first 'real' (meaning it wasn't just me, some friends and my home movie camera) movie I wrote, produced and directed. I was proud of it at the time, but I went through this phase where all I could focus on was how the writing was too expository, some of the transitions were too long, some of the colors don't match, the 'action' was horrible...I started thinking of myself that was better off only working under other people. I wasn't that good, that visionary, that talented to do a film on my own.

But after watching it last night I see something else. Those flaws are still there (as are others I didn't see before), but there is a vision there. I could see now what I was trying to do in a different way. I made a film that took it's time, that had lots of good composition and lighting, good characters, great performances and an interesting human story arc that had a good payoff. When I pair that with the fact that it was only my 3rd screenplay, I was the writer, director, editor, composer, craft service guy and pretty much everything else, when I had no training, experience or real advice from anyone more experienced then myself. It was a 40 minute film, shot in about 4 days for 500 bucks.

Point is, that if someone else were to hand it to me, and I knew all that info about the production, I would watch the film and think. "It's not great, but this guy knows how to tell a story. He might be heading somewhere"

I just thought this might be an appropriate place to put this because, whether you define that as talent or not, I can't say. I just wanted to point out that your perspective on your own work and abilities can change over time.

And, I feel like rambling.

I'm a ramblin' guy.
