I was selling a used sony vx2000 on ebay and it ended and this lady didnt win it. the reserve price was never reached. She E-mailed me this.....

Dear seller, I am interested in your camcorder. I am in NYC, USA. I want to know whether you still have it. I will offer you 3,000USD including the shipping for it. I will be making the payment through western union auction payments(BidPay). Once you give me your full name and address, i will make the payment and you will be contact by bidpay that I have made the payment. I am sending the item to my son in africa for his project in the university and I want it to get there ASAP. I will give you my SONS full information where you are sending it to, . YOU WILL HAVE TO SHIP THE ITEM OUT UPON THE CONFIRMATION/APPROVAL FROM BidPay. If you want to do the transaction with me, you have to end the auction now. You will be shipping through EMS to africa. Thanks. Let me know Mary

sounds kinda sketchy. i dont know anything about bidpay or paypal. :undecided

Hmm that does sound sketchy. I'd be hesitant to do anything. When does she need a reply by? I'm sure some of the members here will be able to give you a solid answer.

You know if it wasn't for the whole "send it to Africa" bit I'd say go for it. BidPay seems to be legit though I'm not sure exactly how it works. I'd say see if you can get a U.S. address, perhaps hers, to ship it to. Let her deal with shipping it to Africa.

There's no way in hell you should do this. It's a scam, big time. S/he's planning on sending you a false confirmation of payment received, you ship the camera ASAP and you never hear from him/her again. That's just my theory, but I wouldn't trust it.

Can't you get a NEW one for much less? What do you think? If it sounds too good...

Great point! I didn't even think to check the VX2000 price. She could buy a brand new one for much less than 3k so I'd say it's a scam as Horse stated.

It's a scam. There are huge numbers of fraudulent Western Union transactions--a big fav of scam artists. And the Africa thing--forget it! Notice the emphasis on immediate shipment--you'd probably get directed to a phony site that would send you a phony confirmation that your phony payment has been received. Then you ship off the camera and shortly discover--surprise there is no payment. You should email "Mary" and tell her you're going to be in NY and you'd like to do the transaction in person--cash for camera. 100% certainty that "she" declines or never answers. Scum.

Bidpay is a legit service. That doesn't mean someone can't hack a way to send you a fake e-mail from Bidpay.

I'd say it looks like a scamorama scamalamading-dong scam scam scam.

But if you want to play along, agree with them to do it. Then they'll send you the shipping address. One of two things will happen-- either Bidpay will actually send you the money order (not a chance in heck of that happening) or, when you're 100% certain it's a scam, you can do whatever you want with that address... tell the FBI, or send 'em a p-p-p-powerbook (see http://www.p-p-p-powerbook.com), or whatever... that way they'll at least have to pay the customs fees to collect their "VX2000"...

Barry, you make a great point. Mess with these people. Get as much info as possible. Alert the authorities.

I think the Ebay policy is not to have members respond to sellers & buyers offering to buy or sell goods off-site. If it's a legit store or business that's different. But African pawnshops are another matter!! Having used bidpay many times, even though the transaction can be confirmed, there could be problems with credit cards. Assuming the card is stolen, all the scammer needs is the number . The Transaction could go through. With a window of a few hours or days before its discovered stolen. By that time you've shipped the goods, to a third party address in Nigeria! Definitely AVOID such offers even if not from Africa!!

It was too tempting. As soon as I saw 3,000USD I had to respond. I'm tryin to save up for a dvx but I think i'm just takin the money out of my savings monday morning to buy one. Thanks for all your replys. I could of been in serious trouble there.

That ppp-powerbook is great! Once Mother Goose replies. Get a big shipping container like they use on ships, load a cameraman, a Swat team and a Humvee, enough Big Mac meals for 3 weeks and ship it collect. Might make an excellent documentary!!
