do you need an mbox or 002 to run pro tools...

Yes, you do, unless you're running ProTools Free, which is a downloadable version off their site they offered that's limited at around 8 tracks I believe, so people can learn the software.

Just break down and buy the system. You'll have many many less headaches than trying to crack it. That, and the 002 is a great lil controller.

I think, the times I've forgotten to turn on my 002, pro tools tell you its unable to find digi hardware? that would be my first hint....
