Do you loan out your camera?

No way would I loan my baby out. I get nervous just letting some else hold it. Hell I get nervous when I'm holding it!:thumbdown

I have lent it out to a few select people, and only if I am 100% comfortable with the deal. I even helped out a fellow DVXuser member (Waltind)

No way, not even with insurance or friendship. The reason is, I have other clients I am responsible to. If someone does something that turns up as a problem later, one of my clients loses.... will whoever I lend it to throw in a wet-lube tape in a pinch? Will someone on the set clean the lens with something unsavory? I dunno... but I'm not taking the chance.

I have actually lent mine out on a few occasions. But that was ONLY because he is a good acquaintance of mine and VERY reliable. Any one else...no friggin' way....

Well, when I get my camera, another one =) the only way I'll lend mine out is if I'm on the set, this way I can experience, and can watch over my camera and make sure no ones trying to pull a fast one. And also to make sure every whipes their hands and fingers before touching a button ;-)

FilmMakerr - I was second cam at an event with the main videographer renting out my gear to him and I using his Sony VX2000 - Well I caught him trying to rack the zoom manually a few times without flipping the switch - Next time I break out the cam to prepare for an upcoming event the zoom isn't working properly and I had to send it in for service. So I since haven't lent out the cam or have anyone shoot with it while I'm on the job.

That sucks, you should of DP'd atleast if youre guy wasn't experienced, or just stupid.

Techically my wife's consulting company owns my/our video/audio gear. We rent it out to the company I work for as photographer for their video production division. So far 22 rental days at $160-200 /day (depending on setup) in 8 months time. Camera & mics almost paid for. Nothing broken yet.

Yeah, the guy I worked for that day taught me a valuable but expensive lesson. He's an excellent photographer with a long background in video - just not knowledgable with the DVX100. I was using his 1st generation VX1000 as a B-roll cam because he knew that the heads were going south and giving him plenty of dropouts. Oh well, since than he's called me twice to rent the cam out, but as luck would have it, it wasn't available for those dates (wink, wink)
