Do you typically use a carnet when travelling abroad with your DVX and mics or do you declare them as "personal effects"?.

I don't, but would like to hear more about who has used them. I travel light and don't draw much attention (except for explaining some of the gear).

You can take DVX and mics without much fanfare. A Carnet can be really helpful and should be used when taking a substantial amount of equipment. It basically helps protect you from being taxed by various countries on the equipment. They might think you are going to try to sell it. Did a large production trip in the 90's where we didn't have one when we went to Japan and some of the equipment didn't show until last day of trip. Not having a Carnet and the lanquage barrier made everything rather difficult.
We travelled back to the US and got a Carnet for the European leg and it was like an afterthought to European Customs officials. Meaning they basically didn't even look at it. My advise would be to get one if you think you may have any difficulties where you are going. Much has changed since 9/11.
Fat Daddy-it must be your good looks that make you so lucky or having the right karma. I'm still knocking em down in Baltimore.

Yes Barking Spider. all of the above.

I have some friends it Baltimore. Any KLM or Discovery connection?

you don't need a carnet with a dvx, just say its personal. Now, a full size rig like an HVX or a betacam, with lights etc, thats a different story. Also, know that Carnets can be a HUGE pain in the ass, and they also raise red flags in certain countries that might force you to have a media "watcher" with you.

As a side note, i've shot with my DVX in something like 25 countries, with no carnet.

Was it just your DVX with you, or did you have a kit? I'll have a kit of:
XH-A1
Batteries
Light reflector/stand
Boom
2 Mics
Cables
50 tapes
And a couple other things.

I wonder if I could get away with saying I'm "just on vacation".

I travel with with about the same set-up (not 50 tapes, but 25) and have not had any trouble. It is carry-on for me.

I always had a kit. DVX, tapes (sometimes up to 100) on board light, mics, etc.

I never had a problem there, but now that I think of itm i have heard about some issues other guys had in China, but they had a joker with them.

I didn't even know about them until today. I've been to Ireland and Germany with my DVX with no problems. I had a hard pelican case with 25 tapes, mic, batteries, automatic pan/tilt head, camera, etc. I took it as a carry on. The only thing I had to do in all locations was open the case and have them check everything.

My other gear was all in my checked luggage (lights, tripod, etc.) and I had no probelms with it.
