Do you ever get the Blue Screen of Death?

Anhar... thanks! I hadn't heard of CCcleaner!

I've had that other stuff for years... when are they gonna' finish regscrub's interface for crap's sake!?

The only other thing on that list that I'm wondering about is HouseCall instead of AVG Anti-virus... both are free. I've used AVG for a couple years successfully (better then Norton) Are you familiar with AVG? Do you know the advantage to HouseCall?

Thanks Anhar. Great list.

I've never had the bluescreen of death with my current laptop. Windows XP gets a real bad wrap when it's stable as hell.

I haven't seen a blue screen in a long time... I kind of miss it :(
Now it's just a sudden freeze or a message telling me Windows is terminating such and such app.

Last week is was a feeze up during boot... and I've been rebuilding my editor ever since.

Sigh.

I'm only posting this because of an early accusation that I have something personally against Microsoft or Windows...

I guess I'm just unlucky... or something is mysteriously wrong with my computer.

I use removeable drives... could that be it? Maybe I haven't dusted the inside of my computer often enough? Who knows... but I said that I'd post this pic the next time it happened... and I took a pic when it happened last week... and I just took the other two 10 minutes ago.

Sucks to be me I guess.

If you save a pic to your desktop you can see the metadata which shows the date and time I snapped the pic with my G6. I just felt the need to show that I didn't make this stuff up.

I had the first BSOD since running XP (back in 2001) just last week.

I got about the same error. The problem? A bad stick of RAM. I removed it, and it's rock-solid again.

Matt, check yours. See if you can try to boot with a single stick, and try them individually.

Thanks David... I'll try that. I appreciate this sort of input because I don't think I always come across the way I'd like. I'm not a total noob to computers and I'm not on a Microsoft witch hunt. This computer just hasn't been as much fun as it should be.

I started off with 2 gigs of standard Kingston ram... the "valueram" series which showed all usa chips on each stick... My computer wasn't very stable back then and I checked the ram first at that time. When I described the problem to Kingston they said the same thing... that it may be the ram. I ended up returning half of it to them and half of it to Newegg. Newegg gave me a refund on their half and Kingston charged me the difference to upgrade 1 gig to HyperX which was made with all winbond (or some brand of particular chip that you want to see... I can't remember the chip brand... PQI Turbo was rated as the best ram and it uses this chip... somebody on the board will know the one I mean)... anyway so they sent me the new ram made with the best and latest chips. This ram autosets to 2-2-2-5 (super-fast high-end ram). I paid around $400 for it... just for 1 gig of ram! After that my problems were much less... but I still had the occasional BSOD.

As I said about the zombie-fest... I had tons of problems with my pc leading up to the deadline... and that's why I dumped premiere and bought all new Vegas 6 + DVD. My pc never was all that stable running premiere! I started out with a Pinnacle card... and later upgraded to a Canopus RT card. Right now my Canopus card is sitting on my desk and I'm planning to bypass the RT accelleration and just do video through the mobo firewire.

Inside the pc I have an Intel 875PBZ mobo running a P4 3gig. I specifically went with the Northwood because the 800 frontside was reported to run much hotter and most people said it wasn't a significant increase in overall speed for the increased heat and power consumption. I've got an XP120 heatpipe cooler on the processor which was the highest rated aircooled solution. My pc rarely gets higher then the low 90's F. Most OC sites said that this cooler could keep a pc almost as cool as liquid cooling. The system has a 550w ps (it was the best I could get at the time). All in full aluminum LianLi inside and out. (They say the aluminum wicks off heat to keep the pc 15-20 degrees cooler then steel cases... and my temps bear that out.)

AGP slot has BFG 6800 GT OC for video. (nvidia)
Slot 1 empty
Slot 2 Linksys 54g wifi
Slot 3 empty
Slot 4 empty
Slot 5 Audigy2

Canopus DV RT card was on Slot 5 with Audigy2 on Slot 4. No IRQ conflicts.

Front of pc is Asus DVD, Pioneer DVD Burner, Audigy2 Panel, Vantec removeable drive (1 of 2)... then inside the AV drive is permanent. I also have 300gig firewire drives that run off the Audigy2 firewire port to hold video projects.

I'm running a clean/fresh install of XP which is fully updated and registered. I also use CC Cleaner (thank Anhar)... and I've had AVG Free, XP Lite, Regscrub XP, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad Aware SE running for years. I periodically defrag my system disc... I've ran chkdsk on it... and my video drives get wiped clean after each project.

The only problem I've seen recurring recently is the stupid KVG.exe thing... which is a "proof of concept exploit" that a lot of us got during a forum server crash a while back.

So there you go... that is my computer's life story. At least now you know where I'm coming from and that it's not mindless complaining.

I'll try the ram thing David... the thing that's a bummer is the crashes aren't that frequent and they are impossible to predict.
