Do you ever get accused of ruining a movie because….

You can’t help it but BASH it during the movie because it sucks so badly??? I hate being in this situation. The movie is terrible and you are pointing out the obvious, then you get criticized for not letting them just “enjoy the movie”. It’s frustrating because you want to just let them be. But, when we are talking about “The Proposal”, I can’t help it. And, it winds up offending me and pissing me off that I am the villain for hating the movie when the true bad guy is the move itself. Anyone? Anyone?

Well if you are talking during the film - I think people have the full right to be pissed off at you.

I cannot disagree with you. But, when the movie is terrible, I just can't shut the F up about it.

PS And, in my defense we are not talking about an "in the movie theater" situation. We are talking about a living room where EVERYONE is making comments about everything. It's just that MY comments have to do with the piss poor storytelling of the movie.

I think one could argue that even a faulty story can teach us about the craft, i.e. you can think of how you would have written it differently. But in the end, it's probably a lot more satisfying to simply ridicule it.

The people with whom I watch movies in our living rooms are always in on the fun of the bashing...

...sometimes to the point of making up our own dialog on-the-fly if what's coming off the screen isn't doing it, for us.

I love doing this with funny people... AT HOME :) I actually PREFER a crap movie over a good one for people hanging out...

On the other hand... I like seeing movies at the theater by myself. If I'm lucky enough to get sucked in to the movie I don't run the risk of being pulled out by questions or commentary from my friend or girlfriend. When somebody around me is ruining the movie experience I'm not above saying "you can shut up or give me the $9 I paid for this".

If it's a kid texting... I may simplify this to saying "hey... gimme' a f*cking break okay" (I find the profanity to be helpful in projecting an alpha-image in this scenario.)

We as filmmakers cannot watch nor enjoy movies the way others do. It's a curse and a gift, the bad films are worse for us, and those very good films we can enjoy more so than others.

Fact is some others may enjoy the proposal while we see it for it's many technical faults on various levels. These others have a blind ignorance that allows them to enjoy it. So I say let them be.

Also you're talking during a movie and I slap you for that. *slap*

This is a popular activity in the Horse Household.

was watching some rated R movie a long time ago and two rows in front of me, right in my line of sight was a lady with her noisy ass 5 year old'ish kid and she was holding him and rocking him back and forth like a loony, squeaking her chair, and the kid moaning and groaning... That's the kinda stuff that pisses me off in a theater. b/c I know neither her, nor I were able to enjoy that movie.

In the same vein of making up dialogue, ridiculing movies with friends, etc....I find it almost impossible to watch my own projects with others without making comments here and there(when at home)...it's like a disease, lol.

I don't like talking even during an awful film.

My "philosophy" when it comes to watching a film is it should be silent, seen in one sitting (no bathroom breaks or anything), etc.

Seeing a film is a psychological thing for me. I hate breaking the mood. If you think about it, when you make your film and look at your edit your making decisions based on the idea that someone is sitting down, and popping in the film and watching it. You don't count bathroom breaks into how the pace of your film develops...why would you?

Some might disagree but I think hitting that pause button even once changes the way you view a film because you bring yourself out of it instead of letting yourself fully soak into what it's trying to say.

Even if it's bad, and maybe this is just me, but I do find that applying the same principle helps me to understand what's bad, why it's bad, etc.

I can sympathize with the OP. A few times my friends with no taste in movies will invite me over under the false guise of doing something I know I will enjoy. I think in situations like these, a little commentary is due.

What pisses me off is that I'll hold my tongue only for them to give me the critical eye when I lament over my love of such movies like 'Blade Runner.'

I feel charged up afterwards to say what bad taste they have, but of course, being the filmmaker, I just feel like I'll come off as the oh wise pretentious one who only watches Godfather and Casablanca.

Something the chair of the Film Department at SU warned us of, as freshmen. One of the very few things about which he turned out to be absolutely correct.

This is where I fetch a theater employee and give them the choice of ejecting the offending party, or refunding my money in full.

I smell Custom Title.

Oh man, I miss those days. Right now they're on hold while we raise our son.

Someday I'll be able to hang out late night with my friends again and watch bad movies, right? Right?

You'll be able to hang out and watch bad movies with your son. Even better.

I walked out of a movie once,

I hated this movie so much I walked out in the middle. And I was on an airplane.
