do you edit your films with a soundtrack already in place?

This might be slightly off-topic, but I was wondering whether most people here edited their films with a soundtrack for the film already in place, or if they edited the film prior to having any music -- and put the soundtrack in at the end -- or if they used some "stand in" music if they did not yet have a soundtrack during the editing process.

Is there a best practices here?

I am currently editing my movie and using some music (that I do not have the rights to) to "stand in" for what will eventually be a soundtrack. (The movie looks so much better with the music! and the editing process seems a lot more fun with the music :-))

This is the sound list so you might get better responces in the editing section but I can tell you that many editors edit to music and most "big" films have temp music in pretty early on. Music however is only a small portion of the sound track. Most big films have sound editorial on around the same time that the picture wraps so the sound dept is feeding sounds to the picture department to use as temp FX. This also gives the full sound team a head start because a library of sounds already exists when serious post begins.

Thanks for the response and the suggestions...

I wasn't sure which editing board to post it on [since they're segmented by editing program] -- but I'll give it a try over there too. :-)
