Do You Buy or Rent Movies?

Both, I suppose... but Netflix has cut down on my buying by a considerable amount.

How does NeFlix work exactly?

They give you 3 movies and you can keep them as long as you want but you can take more than 3 out at a time?

The number of movies that you can take out at any one time depends on how much you want to pay. They have tiers from 2-8 movies out at a time. For example-- I have 4 movies out at any one time for $25 a month.

Netflix sends you the next movie(s) that you have in the top of your queue. Of these 4 movies, 2 come from my queue, 1 from my wife's queue & 1 from my daughter's queue. You can set up as many lists as you want. You can keep the movies as long as you want. Once you send it back prepaid, they ship the next movie from your queue.

I swear by Netflix (great selection), but be warned-- the whole 90% of the country is within 1 shipping day of a Netflix distribution center is flat out wrong. My DVDs go from home (Toledo) to Cleveland-- that's an extra day each way. So my transit time is a minimum of 2 days each way.

That gripe aside, the service has been very good. I'd be hard pressed to consider dropping it.

I look at films the same I look at books. I don't buy every one I am interested in, but I don't just buy the ones I love either. I look for stuff i might learn from. It's a reference library. More than once I have gone back to a film that I only liked (as opposed to loved) to learn something specific about filmmaking. It's nice to have them handy.

That sucks DK, however I live in monterey CA and it indeed takes takes 1 day to ship, and when I went to visit my dad in AZ, I just changed my shipping address to his house (which took about 1 extra day for the movie i sent back to CA) but then they started right back to one day from the AZ warehouse.

Awesome!

That being said, however, I've seen too many other people that are at 2-3 days each way to assume that's the norm.

I like the unlimited rentals at blockbuster. Can rent as many as I have time for a month, and I can drop them off and get them whenever I feel like it. I dont think I could wait for netflix shipping. I guess I like knowing I have the freedom to spontaneously return and rent whenever I want.

I rent them all, then buy the ones I know I will want to watch over and over. No idea how many I have.

I'm a Netflix chick.

Same here... rent, then buy the great ones! Some I buy right off the bat though (if I've seen them on the big screen)

Every now and then the local movie gallery has a '4 used dvds for 20 bucks' deal, so I sometimes get 3 definites and 1 maybe.

I thought "maybe Cellular won't suck".

Now I just get 4 definites.

Also, I generally assume that, at any given time, one of my friends has to own the latest 'blockbuster', so I don't worry about it.

I'm incredibly lazy about going to see a movie at the theater. I've seen 6 movies at the theater this last year. The cost of buying the movie is low enough that I end up buying it. The sad part is that I've bought some stinkers and still can't get rid of them (it's called collecting). Right now I've got about 38 movies that I haven't seen yet. Of course 25 of those are on 3 compilation sets; two cheesy horror and one collection of martial arts masters. I don't like martial arts movies, so I figured getting a set featuring Bruce Lee and Sonny Chiba would give me all I needed. The horror collections are the Hammer series and then another one of horrible transfers of 1950s-1970s "classics."

i rent mainly and when I learn that it's got some great special features or commentary that I can learn from - I buy.

We're not lazy, it's just that our kids are BOTH finally old enough that we don't have to be restricted to G and PG :cheesy: -- FINALLY we've been getting out to the movies more... now it's only the matter of finding time between our jobs and hobbies that keep us from venturing to the theatre more often.

We've got at least ten movies we bought and haven't watched yet... we always seem to have a pile of movies to see. Right now our pile is mostly "heavy" movies that we just haven't been in the mood for.

I hear you. My daughter is 23. Our tastes are a little different but I've got to admit that she has a wider range of taste than you might expect.

NetFlix is really nice. I also use their database to find what is available on DVD to purchase elsewhere, since their collection is vast.

The problem I have with them is people have no idea how to treat DVD's, so many common titles show-up scratched or covered with some nasty film (use your imagination) that I need to carefully clean to make a disc watchable. They also don't include all the discs of a known multi-disc title, so I'm not getting my full enjoyment out of it.

Collecting is fun. I'm a behind-the-scenes junkie, so I love commentaries and featurettes in special editions that you just can't rent.

I will occasionally buy a movie sight unseen if it looks halfway decent, has a lot of extras, and is not much more than the price of a store rental. If it wasn't that good, why would I want to pay a late fee just to get through all of the extras? Even the worst of the movies I bought this way had some redeeming quality to it, like a clever menu layout to study for my own use or some sort of commentary.

However, my collection is getting a little out-of-hand. You know the old saying:
"The things you own end-up owning you."

I am not sure, for my favorite movies, i choose to buy a dvd disc, for common movies, maybe i will rent movie. However, no matter which way i get the movie, i am sure to use this Mac DVD Ripper to convert the dvd files so that i can play them on my ipod everywhere.

i go the netflix route and have save ALOT of money rather than buying.
one thing i dont like about blockbuster is their censorship of movies.
