Do You Buy or Rent Movies?

and if you buy them, about how many DVDs do you own?

We're up to about 700 (and, being the freaks we are, have had to catalog them!)

from about 100 ago...

I've never rented a DVD. I have 784 DVDs and 1252 CDs. I'm running out of room. I keep them alphabetized so I can find what I'm looking for and of course I keep an Excel spreadsheet.

I use Movie Collector -- great software -- you just put in the title and it goes out on the net and gets all the IMDB (and other source) info. We probably have over 1000 CDs too, but since iTunes, we rarely buy them anymore.

It may sound weird but I like having the physical CDs. I HAVE purchased songs from iTunes but only when it was a case of only wanting ONE song and not wanting to buy a whole CD for one song. More than two songs and I'll buy the CD.

i have rented maybe 40 films ever. my rental card is just gathering dust. i own about 200 dvds. generally, i just see films at the cinema. i have an Unlimited Card and i go see about 3/4 films a week for €17.50 ($25) per month. before that card system started i blew a serious amount of cash on tickets. and my cinema is a such a darling. 17 screens and a great mix of hollywood, indie and foreign.

I never rent movies either. I'm up to about 260 DVDs now. I'd rather own the movie and watch it whenever I want rather than rent it and pay 1/3 the price. Blockbuster thinks I still have Saving Private Ryan out. I owe a couple of hundred dollars in late fees. The Blockbuster in my area pulled the same scheme on one of my friendstoo.

i was in the same boat but my video shop had an amnesty on late fees. come in and rent a dvd and all outstanding charges would be dropped. so i took out Dig! and rewatched it.

I rent movies. I only own a handfull, though I should start buying movies I keep hiring out over and over again..

I think I only have rented maybe 10 movies... if even that. Tried a couple of years ago when a rental place opened right near my house, just for the sake of trying. But before and since then I've only bought 'em.

I subscribe to Netflix and also own about 200 DVD's. I intend to keep renting them and only buy those I really like. As for storage, I got a 400 disc Sony changer that allows cataloging (with a PC keyboard!) so the jewel boxes are stored in a box elsewhere. I also own about 100 CD's that I intend to rip to MP3's to conserve on changer slots.

I thought about putting together a PC video server with terabytes of storage, but the changer solution is far simpler and less expensive. Perhaps in the future as I run out of changer slots I may just go ahead and do that.

I also keep a database of my collection on my Treo 600 phone using MobileDB.

Netflix is our testbed for what we purchase. Netflix is the best $13.95 we spend a month - there are always three new movies sitting by the DVD player, ready to watch.

We own less than 100 titles, mostly fun stuff for the kids.

i rarely rent dvd's. i own close to 300 dvd's right now. that's not including tv shows that i have on dvd. if i counted those i have around 500 dvd's total. i love getting my favorite tv shows on dvd. movie titles are around 300 and i have a lot of tv shows on dvd... i'm counting actual discs for the tv shows not titles...

I probably have about 150-200 DVDs (and about 600 vhs tapes...we were late bloomers into the digital world) We never rent, but when I am curious about a film I get it from the library first. We get it for a week and it costs nada. There have been a few films I though I wanted to buy, but in the end I decided against it after seeing them.

I use NetFlix for rentals.

I also purchase a lot and currently my collection is up around a 1,000. I use the boltz.com storage system to hold them all.

Been on netflix for a while, but I find that I get lazy after about two months of watching, so I'm gonna freeze it tonight.

Otherwise, I buy indie films that aren't easily available in my area, and just rent the bigger ones.

"collecting" is overrated. a HUGE waste of cash and space. Netflix all the way. I own less than 100 dvds, only the movies I asbolutly love, or things you cant rent, like double dip, tons of extras sets most rental places dont offer
