Do you always have to render?

I was wondering if everyone always has to render imported footage. If I shoot 24pA, no matter what preset I use when importing or setting up the project, I have to render the footage. Not fun!

What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

Thanks...

Actually no- assuming you have decent hardware your editing should be in real time. It's not the same as rendering for 3D. If you get a red-render bar in FCP it typically means you have a mismatch between your clip and sequence settings. For example- you have 29.97 clips on a 24p timeline or vice versa.

like noah said, it should be in real-time unless your mixing framerates...

check your timeline settings and make sure it is set for 24p.

It is. I changed both the capture rate and the "new project" to 24 NTSC.

Hhhmmmm...I'll keep experimenting.

after you capture in 24p... then when you drag your first clip to the timeline, does it say something like "would you like to change the frame rate of the timeline to match that of the clip?

i know sometimes it will do that for me... let me see if i can find out exactly what the dialogue says

heres the dialogue box i get...

does that ever come up for you?

No. I'm using FCP HD v4.5. I haven't upgraded to Suite 2 yet. Maybe it's a preference setting... I'll poke around.

OK. I just went outside and used setting #6 on the dial, which is 24pAdvanced, correct? I watched the frame counter as it was shooting and I swear that it was going beyond 24 frames (obviously it was so fast that I couldn't be positive, but it looked like it). Even so, when I captured it using the 24 frame NTSC preset in FCP, I still had to render it (the red line appeared above the clip). I have a Mac G5 dual 2GHz processor with 1.5GB RAM and no other programs running. I've done this before with footage shot on my cheapo miniDV cam and captured into FCP using the DV preset without having to render.

I'll keep at it...

To be clear:

24PA = 23.98 fps (6 on your dvx dial)
24P = 29.97 fps (5 on you dvx dial)

When you capture it into FCP are you using the 2:3:3:2 Advanced Pulldown removal?

Open you clip in Cinema Tools and see if you can Reverse Telecine the pulldown out of it.

You shouldn't be getting a red bar if you settings all match. i.e. Advanced Pulldown removed when captured and Sequence setting at 23.98 fps.

Thanks Mr. Hollywood! No, I'm not using the ones you suggest, so I'll try them. I'm not familiar with Cinema Tools. I should probably find a course somewhere.

Do you know of any guides, sites, manuals, etc. that explain all this? The DVX manual doesn't get specific, nor does the Final Cut Pro manual. Barry Greene's DVX Book/DVD that I just bought for $70 doesn't either. I took TV/film in college, but everything was analog then.

I appreciate your help!

I'm not that familiar with your version's manual, but in my manual it discusses all this in Part IV, Chapter 24.

Sorry to jump into this thread with questions, but this could possibly help others as well. Blaine, is it necessary to always use the pull down removal with 24pa and is it only 24pa where you need it? I thought you were suppose to import 24pa footage at 29.97

If you don't remove the pulldown, you're going to have an interlaced frame every fourth or fifth frame (I believe). It's basically the same as 24P. This interlaced frame causes problems when trying to do many "effects". If you shoot 24P, edit in a 29.97 timeline. If you shoot 24PA, edit in a 23.98 time line.

Yes, the Advance Pulldown Removal only removes the duplicated (flagged) frames when shooting 24PA. It will not remove the interlaced frames from 24P.
