Do you act in your films?

the whole reason I got into film making was because I initially wanted to be an actor.

But because most of the productions happening, are 3-4 hr drives away (one way).. it really put a damper on that idea.

Instead of that stopping me, I figured.. I'd just learn to do it all, and make my own films right where I am located, and get other people who might have the same vision to share it with me.

I do feel somewhat selfish, if I write a script... direct, do music, edit it, etc... as well as star in it. I'm more or less of the mind, that actors should play the roles that they fit in the best. If I'm the best fit for the lead role, then I'll let someone else run the camera for my parts. I think I'm more of a character/supporting actor though. (Think Steve Buscemi) So this would work out pretty well.

I started making films so I could act in them, however I rarely act and direct in the same film. I like to focus on one or the other because I feel like I do a better job when I have less to worry about. Usually I'll write and direct or write and act but rarely will I do all three.

I'm trying to get my friend John to direct one of my films, but he works during the day. I do too, but I have more free time.

I am about to start filming on my biggest film endeavor yet. (ive made 4 (2-5 min shorts) and 1 10 min documentary so far). Its going to be a 7-10 min short that i may expand into a 20-30 min if it goes well. Going to try for better lighting, shooting, audio etc... this time around.

The script i wrote though has 5-7 characters, and im short on actors so i will likely have to play a major role. I really wanted to stay behind the camera, and maybe only play a very small role if i had to, but due to lack of actors looks like i will be pushed up into one of the larger roles.

Not what i really wanted, and i dont really love my acting, but its either that or just stay stagnant which i refuse to do.

Heres crossing my fingers and hoping i dont stink the place up.

I'm all for doing everything yourself (probably one of the few on this forum), but acting and dealing with five other actors? I'd write something that could be just as technically ambitious, but maybe have one or two actors. Go watch "Hard Candy". Two actors, one location. Great film.

I've acted in both my short films. I can bet it would be a huge job to work on a full production and also be worried about lines and deliverance. I urge you to try your hand. You might come up with something amazing. I've very pleased with how my films turned out and I had more fun being in the. Check it out

I'm no actor. But a cast member showed me ghost the day of the shoot and I had to step in.

I had to wear a wig, hold a dildo, and only had on draws, wingtips, and flourescent green knee high socks, and huge bulge between my legs. It was a wild night and now I see why I don't act. I suck at it. But it sure gets a laugh.

Freaking excellent film. That chick had such a creepy vibe, and the guy seemed totally normal, but nothing could be further from the truth and we knew something was up from the start. But yes, it was two people in one place (a few locations but one place) and the film never got boring. Ellen Page did such an excellent job.
