Do we all just hang out with too many men?

So I need help quick.

Anniversary today. 11 Years. She wants a three-diamond ring.

Well -- so I had Christmas concerts all week and have been stressed out about that. I sit around trying to edit some work here... stressed out about that. Bill Clinton hasn't called me back... stressed out about that. Moved on to Sam Waterston, but his publisist was gone Friday.

Plus, I'm heading to Chicago on Sunday where I know I'll be able to shop for some nice ice!!

So -- I'm at the BX (post exchange) and I see this guy giving this demo of a product. He's making ice cream with freakin cabbage in it!!! AWESOME! I taste it and my body's going into some sort of nutritional shock -- this thing's great! Juice... soup... flour... amazing.

So to the tune of $350 I buy this -- great price by the way... http://www.vitamix.com/

I get home and I see my sister online...

Hey

Hey

Ok -- Anniversary Gift? Christmas Gift? or am I an ass? http://www.vitamix.com/

(pause..)

If she didn't ASK for this, YOU'RE an ass!

__

Buddy calls me up. Jeb! Need your help. Got this gift for my wife...

DUDE! You can't get away with buying an appliance for your anniversary! Even if you give it at Christmas, it can't be the BIG gift.

__

My wife loves me and this really won't be a problem... and I'll get the ring in Chicago... should I NOT give the http://www.vitamix.com/ today?

Here it is almost 5am and I'm panic'd about it already.

Last year my significant other gave me a coffeemaker for Christmas.

I already had a coffeemaker. The one he picked out was a little more high-tech, but... if I'd wanted a new coffeemaker, I would have bought one for myself.

When it comes to gift-oriented occasions, women... OK, I hate to generalize, so I will say, many women want two things:

  • A gift that shows you've been paying attention to them.
  • A gift they wouldn't buy for themselves (because they think it would be too self-indulgent or too extravagant or whatever).

Listen to your sister -- it can't be the aniversary gift, and if it's the Christmas gift, it can't be the big one.

I understand that you got excited about that appliance, but bear this in mind: YOU got excited about it... If she'd been at the BX, would SHE have gotten excited about it?

(Now, in hindsight... about that coffeemaker... He may have thought it was OK because the year before I had requested Caphalon cookware. To me, a $300 set of cookware was something that was too self-indulgent or extravagant to buy for myself. But, clearly, if not requested, or if you are not Martha Stewart, I think a number of women would be offended by receiving cookware, appliances, etc., for Christmas... So, maybe he was just confused...)

You are rather lucky this year because she has told you exactly what she wants. All you have to do is follow through... ;)

Good luck!

Dude, your in so much trouble, the only way your gonna pull this one off is if you make her a full breakfast with this thing, and then put the ring box on the tray.

Listen to her . . . She's absolutely f*cking right. Diamonds (or other tastefully designed fine jewelry) always does the trick. A second choice, a relatively expensive ($300) cool looking watch. If you don't have any fashion sense--take someone who does to help you select. If you really wanna get lucky on Xmas morning, I haven't met a woman yet who didn't want a Louis Vuitton purse ($600-$1,200).

Forget:

Perfume (unless you know exactly which one she likes--then get one of those gift sets as a side gift).
ANY home appliance.
Generally, anything practical.

Forgot to answer your question. I'd stash the Vitamix, and give her a lovely card and flowers (those always work) instead, with the promise of the ring from Chicago.

Mythfit, I like the way you think!

You, too, NBC.

Cap'n, listen to your homies. They've clearly been well schooled...

By the way, I get the impression you are some sort of music-oriented guy? Do you compose? Then compose and record something for her to pop in the CD player while you're away -- something that sounds like diamonds... Include it with the card and the lovely flowers! If you're not a composer, then just make her a compilation CD of your favorite songs, and include at least one like "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend."

BTW -- Unless roses are her very favorite flower, don't do the dozen red roses thing -- so cliche. Get her favorite flowers or an artfully done arrangement including her favorite colors, and try to go for one that's very fragrant... Or, better yet, a bouquet of the same flowers she chose for your wedding... (If you don't remember, call her mother.)

Don't give her the Vitamax. The gift you give her has to be something that either took great sacrifice or hard planning or both. When my wife and I were first talking she told me she wanted to go jet skiing. So on my anniversary we went to a bed and breakfest in Annapolis and I took her jet skiing. Now bear in mind that she told me this 2 years ago and only said it once , but the fact that I remembered made it great.

Try this idea. Buy her a glass/rose. You can find them on e-bay. Then go and get a custom wood box made to fit the rose. Then get the box engraved to say" like this rose my love for you will never die". Also you can make her a card that say

Paper = .50
Ink = .35
Spending the rest of my life with you = Priceless

well -- didn't take any of your advice...

She loved it.

at least she's not as shallow as all of you!!!

Okay Capn'... you use the Vitamax to make two seperate cabbage milk shakes... make sure she isn't watching.

Blend a Viagra in yours and an "E" in hers.

She'll be humming the Vitamax theme song for a week.

is it an industrial strength blender or am i missing something?
<hijack>I was considering getting my gf a mac mini. she has an ibook from work and a laptop running windows 95 at home, im not really sure if a computer falls into the same category as a bowling ball..

No -- honestly it's more than an industry strength blender. But nevermind.

I'm hoping for the Mac mini Intel for Christmas in January.

CaptainMench-

You lucked out! Not only did she NOT freak over the juicer but you lucked out by picking a woman that WOULDN'T freak out over a juicer. She sounds like a real keeper.

My girlfriend is pretty cool as well. But, MsManhattan is right on. My girl asks for things that she couldn't justify buying for herself. Jewelry, a $200.00 pair of boots, etc.

Sink, the computer thing might not be a bad idea if she has expressed some interest. She might work on a computer all day and it might be the LAST thing she'll want. Or, it might be just what the doctor ordered. Either way, she might appreciate the computer, but you'll never get tears. Practical gifts NEVER get tears. It's a chick thing.

I asked for a Kessler Crane for Christmas. If it's under my Christmas tree on the 25th, I'm gonna ball like a baby.

You are a very lucky man.
:)
Count your blessings Captain.
And Happy Anniversary.

As a female who loves to cook, I would have been thrilled with something like that! But, then, maybe I'm wierd. For our first Christmas together I asked my hubby to please get me this huge spice rack with about 50 different spices and herbs. He did and I think its better than any piece of jewelry, not to mention more useful ... and I've got a happy hubby with a happy tummy! But, like I said, maybe I'm just wierd!

For THIS I'll say a big AMEN!

Thanks

well, you could at least tell her it is still on the list for the future..and since you now have more time, you should consider going out looking at it WITH her. that alone could make her feel good. you know with the family and all and being MRS.MOM, the better part of her said "cool" to the vitamix cause everyone can enjoy..but she probably was a TAD crushed. this is exactly why single ladies should go for the jewelry, cause later on in life, there will be things like VITAMIX and a sweet vaccum cleaner ( what is this brand? something european?) that will easily become gifts associated with WORK. oh geez, I hope I'm not makign you feel bad now.

I probably the worst kind though.. I want a 30 inch flat panel & some rocks!

among many other video vices..

I read CaptM's first post and all I could think of was this...
