do this title in FCP 4.5 HD?

I want to create a title screen for various parts of my video. It would consist of:

1. A gold color background filling the screen.
2. A dark green bar, across the center of the screen.
3. White type w/drop shadow centered horiz./vert. in bar.

If I use the "solid"background in a lower 3rd title, I can't center the text vertically within the bar. And the drop shadow is applied to the bar, not the text.

I tried creating a gold matte, green rectangle w/large aspect ratio, and title (in that order from bottom to top), but the gold couldn't be seen. It was just green bar against default black, with text on top.

Would like to stay in FCP, but can I only do this in something like Livetype, or should I resort to Photoshop?

Photoshop sounds like the way to go as long as your text and graphics don't need to move, and even then I think you could animate the Photoshop layers, though I myself haven't leanred how to do that yet.

Do it all directly in FCP. First, under your Effects tab in the Browser, go to Video Generators > Matte > Color. Double click to open in Viewer, set color, drop into video track 1.

Next, go to the Video Generators > Render > Highlight. Drop that onto video track 2 and adjust the bar in the center as you need it. You'll want to also drop the Color Key filter into that Highlight clip, use it's eye droper to select the black background of the Highlight clip, adjust as needed.

Finally, drop you text clip onto track 3 and edit as needed. Poof, done in less time it would take you to launch PS and open a new document.

Yep. Although something composited in PS will give you more control over the final look, what you discribe can be done totally in FCP very quickly. I do it a lot.

Also if you need to scale the text down or move it within the color bar you can scale it down the same way you would any other clip and move it to a new position...I have done that with stuff I have created in Livetype then added text in FCP later.
