"Do They *Have* to be Dwarves...?"

Sad Max

Artful Dodger
A friend working on one of the 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'-inspired projects presently underway relates the following from a studio exec in a production meeting:

Do they *have* to be dwarves...? Maybe they could be a band of bandits who like to *call* themselves 'the dwarves.' Or maybe one of them could be an actual dwarf, and the rest adopt the name so he doesn't feel bad...

Right out of The Player.

What was remarkable was the exec's apparent desperation to find some way, any way of making the picture without casting actual dwarves (persons of diminutive stature, little people, height-challenged individuals, insert your euphemism-of-choice here...) in a story that for at least 200 years has been titled blah-blah-blah-dwarves.

Maybe this exec doesn't realize that Elijah Wood is not actually a hobbit.

He wanted to talk about doing the shrink-em-down-in-post thing. Until the director pointed out how much time and $$$ that would cost.

It seemed to me that PJ did the bulk of the shrinking with forced perspective and oversized body doubles...How about having Peter Dinklage play all 7 dwarves?
