Do opossums realize how hideous they are?

Luis, it's all about the press. Sure, you show one picture that paints it in a bad light, and then we're all supposed to believe that that's what ALL opossums look like. I can't believe you're bad-mouthing the 'possum. I mean, look at this little fuzzy critter:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://kaweahoaks.com/html/oppossum.jpg&imgrefurl=http://kaweahoaks.com/html/opossum.htm&h=184&w=250&sz=12&tbnid=u0gVPtXPYhwJ:&tbnh=78&tbnw=106&hl=en&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dopossum%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG

I swear, you're as bad as the "press" out there. Sure we could all be scared away by your nasty little picture up there, but then what about the other side of the story? What about, for example, this little darling:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fwnp.com/opossum-teeth.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fwnp.com/opossum-teeth.htm&h=525&w=403&sz=81&tbnid=N17s9m7e_BwJ:&tbnh=129&tbnw=99&hl=en&start=22&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dopossum%26start%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN

Try to show some balance, willya?

Ok that's still pretty creepy ...

I saw one up close for the first time a couple of months ago. I thought it was a giant rat at first. **shudders**

You know how one of their defense is to play dead, well I found one several years ago in my front yard. I thought it was dead, so I quickly picked it up and threw it in a trash bag, tied the sucker up tight so other parasites wont eat it and left it in the dumpster. I guess its dead now.

Hey in New York Opossumis are called rats!

They're really not that bad, you just marinate them for about an hour in a garlic sauce, then grill them at 350 for about an hour. Just like chicken.

Thanks Barry... the shot of the hissing one nearly made me jump out of my chair.

How's this for a nasty story?

A girl I knew in college was living in an old house here in Austin (they are all old houses near campus...built during WWII). She's taking a shower, washing her hair... gets out of the tub... puts a towel on her hair and walks out of the bathroom. The moment she was closing the bathroom door she hears a CRASH from the bathroom.... she looks in, and what does she see?

A giant hole in the ceiling.... rubble on the floor.... and a big squirmy hissing opposum in the wet bathtub struggling to get out. UGH.

Had she stayin in the shower for just a few more minutes that thing would have landed on her head. And you all thought the Psycho shower scene was scary!

i got knocked out by a armadillo once in FL. I picked up the waddling creature by the tail, thinking it would play dead, I Leaned over it grabbed the tail it jumped straight up smacking me in the face. busting my nose up, i was laid out for about 5 seconds. when i looked around he was waddling away looking for grubs to munch on

Hahaha, Classic!
(of course it's funny when it happens to someone that doesn't happen to be me).

while we're on the topic of ugly mother f*ckers (umf's), i was sleeping on a mattress on the floor last night- and one of these little umf's was running all over the place. scared the **** outa me

jeeshus what planet did these things come from...did it crawl out of your ear? what was that night gallery rod serling episode

nasty and tough. I have run over them before and they get up running away afterwards. I hit one out of a tree one time with a baseball bat. didnt even phase it, just ran off. Another time I cornered one and stabbed him with a long knife on a pole, he came back again the next day. I saw the scar on him when I went in for another stabbing. Another time we cornered one in this small pocket where my fence and the neighbors fence meet. We threw bricks and big rocks on him and he was surely trapped for good. I went out the next morning and he was gone. I tell you those things are harder to kill than any animal I know of.
The reason for me being violent was the opossum was eating the cat food and I didnt want those diseases getting on my cats or their food. so so so ugly

lol, dude if you are in a rural area you should get a shot gun -
it would be a tad more humane, hahaha

consder a BB gun if you are in town or how about the potatoe gun someone posted in the cafe (jk)

yeah I live in a city so shotgun might wake some people up. bb gun is broke.. they havent come around in a while, because the cats are inside now.. good times

I swear, no matter how old I get...somethings in this world will never make any sense to me (like the existence of the opossum).

The fact that such a primitve animal is still around speaks volumes on why it is still around. I used to work with some at a zoo, and they are creepy up close, but they deserve some props for being able to co-exist with us.

It turns-out that the ones that escape being roadkill don't live a whole lot more than 2 years anyway. Apparently they can cover 4-5 miles in a night, and they naturally burn-out and die.
Let's face it, most life forms only naturally live a bit past reproductive age.
Except for Demi Moore, etc.

You know...for some reason opossums don't seem that scary anymore to me.
Imagine this thing crawling around your backyard.
