Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I watched a bad accident happen right before me...at a DISTANCE.

If I had been doing the "2 second" rule (or whatever it is) I would have been in the accident ( myself and my video gear ). I don't think 2 secs is enough.

stay back.

the car in the accident was totaled, though the driver climbed right out.

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I never ride on the ass; ever. Too many dumbasses on the road. They oughta make the DL Test as hard as it is too finance a stereo. Cant even believe the jerk offs they allow to drive.

:D

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I think mandatory drivers' education would be a good start. Where I live, you can't get a motor boat licence without taking a certified course, but you can get a DL in a 30-minute road test. Granted, you can capsize your boat and drown. But the chances of an accident on the road are as high as a boating accident, and several people can get killed in in instant.

Oh, and mandatory physics (not physical) education. Just understand the mechanics of automotive transportation, man! Velocity, acceleration, energy, momentum... I see frigging TRUCK drivers that apparently don't understand those concepts...

Boy, am I in venting mood today...

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I get people riding my ass all the time... So tempting to just tap the breaks sometime, just to teach em a lesson.

Just as long as the DVX isn't in the trunk :o

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I read a statistic somewhere that said that about 80% of the drivers out there consider their driving skills "above average".

Think about that one for a minute... ;)

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Yup, you should always assume that the driver ahead is a lousy one. Actually, it's the 3-second rule, but I only know that since I just got my permit (I overstudied on all of those rules).

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Spend one day here and you will think Americans drive like pros.

5-6 people on 1 motorcycle. No helmets. 10 year olds driving around. Everyone driving the wrong way on a 1 way roads. It's the only place where you MUST look, not only left and right, but UP and DOWN when crossing the street. There are rules but they're not enforced.

Last night I got on my motorcycle and strapped on my helmet. A Thai man asked, "Why you wear your helmet?" I said, "Because I like life and my parents love me." He laughed and said, "The police don't care if you wear helmets after 5pm." I said, with a smile, "I care." and drove off.

I thnk the driving in America is bad too, but I sure miss it!

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Hear hear Jim! I have a favorite saying - "people suck." I'm not sure there can be a more true statement than that.

I am constantly shocked by how bad drivers are. I'm not just talking about the classical student driver - I'm talking your good old 35+ year old mothers. What people often don't realize is that you still have the same proportion of good and bad drivers as you had in school. And THAT is sad. What really pisses me off are girls who got a fancy new vehicle from daddy and can't drive worth ****. These cars are ALWAYS automatic transmission. I think if people learned to drive with manual transmissions we might have a slightly better ratio of good to bad drivers. Then again some people just don't have coordination.

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

That is sooooo wierd. Swear to god, I got rear ended Friday while picking up my lttle sister from school. Luck she wasn't in the car when it happened.

Some highschool kid hit me. His fault. He started crying right there in the street because he had gotten two speeding tickets in the last month and his parents were going to KILL him.

He hit me at 10 mph, not that fast, but man he sure did fukc up my neck.

His excuse...he was turning on the radio ::)

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I bet he FREAKED when he saw the Storm Trooper get out of the car. I would start crying too.

Glad you're ok. That really sucks.

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Living in Minnesota where the road is frozen for several months of the year, you learn not to ride anyone's ass too much. There are times where you just CAN'T stop.

p.s. I agree, people suck.

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

It's amazing that when people are tailgating you and you tap the brakes a couple time, how often they will back off.

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Here in California it's impossible to follow the 3-second rule. Doing so says to others, come on in! So people use the 1/2-second rule. That means leave just enough space that a Mini might squeeze in. Although that doesn't stop some a-holes. >:(

Luckily, I generally commute by motorcycle or bicycle. :)

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

I brake-check all the time. MAN it's great to take their heartbeat from a resting lul thinking "i'll get this guy to move over by ridin his tail!", to "HOLY CRAPPPP 200bpm" in one swift kick of my right foot. I always watch the mirror and their eyes to make sure they're really not going to hit me. I've had to floor it a couple times afterwards just to get back ahead of them. It's always the crappy cars too... hmmm

PK: I know exactly what you mean! It was amazing around the world seeing traffic. BUT, from what I witnessed, those places had far FEWER wrecks than here. American drivers are so complacent. Overseas they have to pay complete focus and attention or risk running into the back end of a holy cow. (No really, a holy cow... see "India").

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

Maybe lack of cupholders and wireless network antenas?

Broken radios?

Just speculating....

Re: Do NOT follow people closely while driving

? Are you referring to reference to "crappy cars"?

By that I meant people who drive cars they don't care about so they rough em up and don't care if they destroy other people's property with em. (Like parking next to them in a parking lot... you can plan on having serious door dings).
