I am cheap.
But I needed a boom pole and a shock mount, so I looked around for the cheapest one around, and this is what I found.

a boompole and a shockmount for 100 dollars!
and it is from Guy Graphics.
yippie!
I have bought stuff from these guys and they are very reputable. So I thought myself it had to be pretty good.

So I receved the package this morning,
and guess what I got,
a real fishing rod and a shock mount!!!
I mean a real fishing rod with a modified head. :(

well, this fishing rod is very light, that is a good news.
but not stiff enough. this thing will bend 30 degrees if there is a strong wind. and there are no twist adjusting section locks !
So adjusting the length is impossible. You get either the shorthest leght(everything closed) of 46 inches or fully extended 14 feet, nothing in between. I guess I can put gaffers tape every section, but that will be pain in the ass. I am going to have to find a way to modify this, or maybe I should start going fishing.

so be careful when you go buy cheap boom poles.
You get what you pay for.
and who is the blame for all this?
me.
and am I going to leave a bad feed back for Guy Graphics?
no, they clearly advertised it as a microphone boom system for the low budget filmmaker, which it really is.
well, at least Audio Technica AT8410a shock mount is pretty good....
:(

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

Man, that sucks dude. Well, like you said, at least the shock mount is good.

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

If I may chi_red....

You "looked around for the cheapest one", and got exactly what you wanted.....the cheapest one.

What is there to complain about?

I think chi understands the choice he made. I think it's more of a warning than complaing. Just my 2c.

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

I am trying to find ways to modify this,
I might be able to make a decent indoor boompole(not for outdoors, too much flex). Very light.

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

there is a saying here that literaly translated is " cheap is expensive" . . . sorry to hear you got bitten though!

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

Man I wish I had money to buy a mic too, I'm a broke ass loser that lives with his mama :-[

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

Hahah funny story... sorry but it is..  :D

GG-10 boom pole.. is that the model number for the fishing pole? or they made up their own #? ha

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

you could build one cheaper and it would be more stable. thats what I'm doing - why waste money when you can build most of it? I have a tripod i bought- but thats all I'm buying- dollies cranes, jibs, etc can all be built if you have an open saturday- and itll save you hundreds. plus its one of a kind- my boom is named excalibur. ;)

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

excalibur, awesome....
I am going to name mine the Long Love Gun.

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

I bought one too, and yes it's "el cheapo" but with a little gaffers tape it will suffice, unless you want to suffice for a pole of equal length with interlocking sections for around $500 to $600. :o

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

We used the same exact pole last year on a film. The boom op was irritated the whole time. Not only is there flex problems, but any, I mean ANY slight thumb or finger movement reverberates through the pole (more than usual) and ends up in your sound. That op got a whole new lesson in staying still. Wish you would have mentioned it here first, I would have thrown up a flag for you. Oh well...live and learn.

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

we should have a little DIY article section where members post their plans and stuff, dvxuser exclusive :)

sucks about the boom dude

Re: DO NOT buy cheap boompoles

what is a real boompole supposed to look like anyway? I have never really seen or touched one.
