Do Metal Halide lights work?

Has anyone out there experimented with Metal Halide lights? They are bright and look very white, therefore I am tempted to use them in place of the rediculously expensive HMI's.

It seems too easy. That's why I'm second guessing myself. Someone else out there has to have thought of this by now and either they don't work or I'm just the first genious to think of it. Kidding.

Could someone give me the low down.

Thanks

Metal Halide lighting lacks an even spectrum in general with a spike in green and violet as well as a fairly low CRI. Also, they're not all that consistent between one fixture and another.

HMI is simply a member of the very large metal halide family. See my articles from last year on the subject:

You can find high CRI metal halide bulbs if you search for them. 85 to 90 CRI is obtainable although its rare to see it in daylight like we sell:

Our cdm 150 and the forthcoming 70w version fresnels use those bulbs:

Lots of people out there using it and loving it.
