Do it all backpack

What do people use for backpacks? I have an M2 setup and an Fx1 and I shoot a lot of skiing and it requires me to hike into some tough spots, so carrying cases isn't an option. I'm looking for something that is tough and very protective, and large enough to carry everything. Size isn't an issue for me, just as long as it is comfortable. Other than strapping a pelican case to my back, what are some options that you guys use?

I do a great deal of traveling and like something that
a. is carry on sized
b. doesn't scream "oh look oodles of camera goodies in here"

I was using a DIY padded, and armoured rolling suitcase but over the summer I bought an Ogio Ty Evans, I love it.

The compartments are adjustable and padded enough that I don't think you'll have any problems storing lenses, the adaptor, and the FX1.

as an aside isn't Duluth where the Jamie Thomas is from?

I'll check out the Ogio bag, looks like a lot of room for a good price, I'm just worried about protection...

I googled Jamie Thomas, is it the guy in the RIAA lawsuit or the skateboarder? because the lawsuit guy is from Duluth I believe.

yeah the lady in the lawsuit, had to write a media law paper on it the other day.

The bag is actually pretty well padded, you could stand to add some softer foam between compartment bulkheads if you like.
I usually don't have occasion to go into skate shops but was pleasantly surprised by the bag.

Other board members have suggested kata, REI, and all sorts of bags.

I use the Ty Evans 2 Ogio bag and it's pretty amazing. Really spacious, deep, plenty of compartments and other places to stick stuff. It's a nice bag.

I use the lowepro Vertex 300. Ive used it to carry: one 15inch laptop, HVX200, two 500GB harddrives, two 160GB bus powered drives, charger, cables, boom mics, and other smaller accessories. What I like about this bag is its rigidity, the casing is pretty tough, compact and semi-hard, makes me feel that my camera is really safe. It can also carry a tripod on the outside, and it is supposed to be within carry-on size limits for flights. And ive done so manytimes without problems.

I haven't tried it with my LEX though. But I suppose you should be able to fit it in with at least 3-4 lenses.

good luck!

I have the Ogio too. I bought for a shoot I did in Scotland in the Summer. It is huge, the organization is great. But the thing is a torture device. Bad ergonomics, it's like setting a 4x4' board on your back. The shoulder straps are very uncomfortable. I really loaded it up with about 40 to 50lbs (HVX, 10 P 2 cards, 6 hard drives, cables, AC adapters, still camera, 15" PowerBook, etc.) and I have to say, hiking around Scotland the North of England, riding the trains, in and out of taxis, it was extremely uncomfortable. The day I had to hike through Heathrow all over the place and then hike around Glasgow for a few hours, I actually had blood seep through my skin on my shoulders.

Oh, and the zippers on the Ogio suck. Mine are already almost worn out and I have only had it since September. They should put big industrial zippers on something like this, not little wimpy ones.

The CineBags CD-22 HD LT doesn't hold quite as much gear but it is a hell of a lot more comfortable. If it were me, I would get the CineBags, I have their older non-laptop version I had before I got the Ogio and it is VERY supportive and comfortable. As a matter of fact, if you want a used Ogio, I will be selling mine. I am getting the CB-22. http://www.cinebags.com/backpackcb22.html

Take it from someone who beared that cross on an ambitious trip.

Kata Panda - will hold Z1, matte box, filters, tapes, notebooks, MacBook, and fits nicely in the overhead bin.

Is there a carry on bag (TSA standards) that can carry camera/adapter/rails setup up while it is still assembled? (with room for a Marshall monitor, a Firestore and ac ouple of mics?)

This Kata Bag can hold more than any other bag I could find: http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=252&cid=67&perentId=1&ProdLine=1

I have it but I am thinking about getting rid of it for a bag that holds only an HVX (meaning a much smaller one). Its like new. PM me if you have interest or you can look to buy one new- its great for a carry-all and super protective.
I Don't think it is possible to fit a fully assembled rail system +camera+adapter , etc, into anything that would come close to being a carry-on bag.

what does the vertex 300 AW bag with all the gear in it weigh? What airline did you fly with it?
