Do I need AE for color grading.

I saw some great footage recently. They had posted that they used After Effects (curves) to color grade. I only have Premiere Cs3 can I do the same level of color grading without AE.

Using Curves you can do a lot, the key is to turn on Maxium Bit Depth Rendering, in the setup of the project, esp if your working with 422 colour space, but AE provides better 32bit colour options,

The Curves plugin IS included in Prem CS3 and it does an excellent job

The software doesn't do it, the editor does. You can get some great results really getting into the built in filters in Premiere, even more so with plug ins. The important thing is to understand what needs to be done.

Well you can do colour correcting in Premiere but once you start using After Effects, particullarly Color Finesse, you wouldn't want to use anything less.

Color Finesse also gives higher quality images because of the way it processes the images then you can get in Premiere using several filters.

To me it's in the category of you could shoot your film on a Mini-DV camera or a HDCAM SR. It's not to say the DV camera is bad but you CAN, if you are experienced, get a much better image on the HDCAM. It's the same with Premiere vs After Effects for CC.

Also remember just because you get AE it doesn't mean you're films will instantly look like a multi-million dollar block buster but after months of practice and a number of jobs it could. E.g. Just because you sit in a F1 race car it doens't mean you can drive it like a Pro who has been doing it for year.

That's my two bobs worth, (but AE is fantastic!)

ppro can work in 32 bit space as well, but color finess offers really detailed color tuning tools. it all really comes down to what your trying to do. for most things the 3 way corrector in ppro will work fine but if you need more power or fine tuning theres some great plugins for AE like color finess. PPRO also has some nice correction plugins as well. ..as previously stated. its all about the power of the effect, wehter its a plugin or standard one. its not really about AE vs PPRO as much as it is which one your correction tool of choice runs in if not both of them as alot of the effects do. you can even run some photoshop filters in ppro and ae.
