Do I need a Zfinder if I'm already getting an iKan v5600??

Hey guys. I'm planing on buying an external monitor and arm anyway, so I'm wondering if I really need a Zacuto or LCDVF? I'll be using a tripod/fluid head, slider, kessler crane, 3rd Arm, shoulder rig and occasionally a steadicam merlin that I bought tonight. The iKan will work on all those except maybe the Merlin, but the Zfinder I can only see being a benefit on a shoulder mount, and even then, probably more for additional support more than anything compared to the iKan. This is for a 7D.

My gut tells me that if I have the display, I can save my money and NOT get a zfinder. Does that make sense or do I need both?

you are correct. they look cool though..makes the dinky rig look legit...
oh wait, for daylight situations they may help because thw sun could wash out your external monitor.

But the Monitor, arm and matte box should cover that though don't you think? If all I need it for is looks, then I can just buy someone's throw away hoodman to stick on with the monitor.

It really depends on how you like to operate. If you're an eyepiece sort of guy, go for the zfinder. However, if you're totally comfortable operating off an LCD, save your money for some sweet glass or something.

Most of the video I've shot has been on prosumer miniDV and MOST of the time it was using the LCD display. This was problematic outdoors but it was easier than using the viewfinder when moving around. I guess if I was used to come big pro rig with a big eyecup I would be used to the idea. Obviously I am fairly heavily rigged now (have some - some on its way) and will have a monitor, so like I said, the only time I ca see the advantage would be those times when it is on my shoulder and I think that it will be there the least amount of time. Most of the time it will be on a tripod/head, on a slider with head, in an elevated tree camera rig called the 3rd Arm with head, or when walking on the trails outside (I'm filming hunting shows), or in some cases inside/outside for weddings, personal projects, etc., I'll be using the Steadicam merlin and a wide angle I bought from a lister tonight. I also have some plans to do some snowboard/skateboard stuff that again wojuld see no need for the viewfinder. The ONLY time I see a benefit, is to save weight when using a shoulder rig.

I know I'm kind of a newb to this level of gear and video work, but somehow I wonder if I'm really missing something here, because a z-finder is like $400 and an ikan HD kit is like $800. I still can't understand why anyone would invest in the zfinder instead of a display??

I find when operating handheld I like using a monitor best. Lets you see a bit more where you're going, but it is all personal preference. I'd try out the monitor for a while and see how you like it, if you find yourself wanting the z-finder, maybe go for it.
