DO I need a RAID for this?

I am looking at buying an HVX 200 camera and editing on Premire Pro.

I will be shooting DVCPRO HD 1080i exclusively, so I want to edit in that format.

Then, I need to export in one of the following for my client: mpeg2, avi, or wmv.

Which of these is the best looking file format for DVCPRO HD at 1080i?

Will I need a RAID to do this, or can I survive off of internal and external harddrives?

Thanks.

Any of those export options could be the best looking pending the compression settings you use within that given codec. although as a suggestion ..out of them, I would generally use WM9 pro HD (or just WM9)compression because it will almost always give you the best results per filesize and bitrate.

extrernal drives are not a good idea to edit from in HD (or SD for that matter)unless they are firewire 400/800 or SATA ..USB is not an option. yes.. it can work, but just dont do it. the actual streaming data rate will come back to bite you in the butt. but using a good RAID 0 array (best solution would be internal off different SATA ports instead of an external FW800 array) will give you the best performance for anything. In my machine I use a 1.3 TB RAID 0 array for HD and SD materials used in editing, and 3 seperate SATA 10,000 rpm drives for: audio, programs (such as the adobe suite and other apps i run on the machine), and the O.S. and external drives are used for exporting of finished files and/or backup of entire projects including finished files.

the biggest choke for you is likely to be the amount, and speed of the RAM in your system. i run 4 GB of the fastest the board would take, and get decent realtime using the automatic quality setting in PPRO and Raylight on just about everything including multiple FX and streams of A/V ect. until i start comping in AE (alone or through dynamic link), but AE doesnt really run anything realtime that great untill its rendered. im sure a newer machine than mine would have even better performance results from faster RAM and a faster CPU ect.

anyway, hope this helps :)

Raid is needed if you are pushing multiply layer at one time.

..which is exactly why i think he should have one. ..in a desktop system. with more than 2 GB of ram. the best thing to check on it would be the reccomended system specs for HD editing on adobe.com and then superseed them as much as you can while staying in budget.

yeah im with neil on this one, although a single drive can play dvcpro hd, definitely go with a RAID array if you want to edit comfortably in a wider field. A two drive RAID will even make the biggest difference and well the more the merrier, but riskier. Definitely go internal, but DVCpro HD should be fine on eSATA even if its port-multiplied.

Can I get a minor clarification on the RAID set up? Regarding the SATA ports- are you saying the RAID0 drives and the os/programs drive should be seperate ports? I'm setting up a system right now and trying to figure out the best configuration. Was planning on 4 drives; one for os/programs, one for cache/scratch and the 2 disc RAID for the [hd] video.

I would RAID three of your drives instead of just 2, then of course keep that one separate for OS/applications. You can RAID through bios but the best RAIDs (though pricier) are with separate hardware in which case they go into your PCI ports and give you the SATA ports to use. If your going software through bios though, your hard drives can go into whatever SATA ports on your motherboard you want. Just keep track of their port numbers so that you enable those ports for RAID through bios. I would just keep os/system drive SATA port 1, then the additional drives ports 2,3,4, then enable those for RAID in bios.
