Do I have to compress?

I have no experience w/ Sorenson or any other compression programs. Am I going to have to purchase something in order to get my zombie flick down to the right size? In other words, will I end up with a shitty quality version if I don't have a compression program because I know it has to be 30 MB. Thanks in advance. Tim.

There are a ton of free and open source programs that will help you with compression. It might take some research, but you'll be able to do it. www.doom9.org is a good site to learn about different codecs and encoders. If nothing else you can download Windows Media Encoder (free) and encode to a WMV file. Making 5 minutes look good in 30 MB or less isn't that hard.

You could also post a DV version and maybe someone with Sorenson could download it, compress it for you, and then send it to you.

If you have a website and post a version I could compress it for you. PM me offline.

Well if you had used small zombies in the first place, then you wouldn't have to compress them!

Thanks so much for the help everybody.
Sirius: I'm using Vegas 5
Isaac: I don't have a website as of yet. Thank you so much for your offer! I saw that sorenson was like $200 bucks or something....what is so good about it when you can get programs for free for compression?

Sorenson Squeeze does a better job of compressing - that is better quality video for the same bit rate, or same quality video for lower bit rate. Even for wmv and mpeg2 files, where it uses the Microsoft and Main Concept codecs, it does a better job than Premiere or Encore. Don't ask me how. Sorenson's 3.1 Pro codec is the best one for Quicktime. They also have good codecs for Flash, mpeg4 and h.264.

Squeeze also has some nice features such as batch processing, and watch bins for those who do a lot of compressing.

Yes you can get programs that do compression for free, so you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. It was for me.
