Do I create sub-clips in FCP?

Coming from Avid here, so not sure about the best procedure in FCP. I'm about to start synching all audio to video clips before the edit begins. I would rather not create a whole lot of new media, and so I'm wondering if I can create a new "sub-clip" which contains both audio track and video track locked together without rendering out new media?

Cool. Thank you. Last question: I can't seem to tell whether locking audio+video in the subclip affects the subclip in a sequence (that is, if I lock or unlock the subclip separately, will the subclips within the sequence also lock and unlock at the same time).
