Do I buy now or after NAB?

After almost 18 months of waiting (sucking up to my wife), I will finally be allowed to purchase my DVX100b in a couple of weeks (tax return). My question is, do I buy now, or wait until after NAB?

I guess my real question is, will the price go down after NAB?

Well, some companies have discounts at the booth. I believe B&H does this regularly. It's an added benefit to going to the shows.

B&H usually has some show specials, like 10% off of this or that. No way to know if they'll have a special on the cam you want, or what degree of discount it might entail.

Last year at NAB Samy's was having a killer sale on HVXs, everywhere else in the country they were going for $5600 and Samy's was selling them on the show floor for $5100. Nowadays you can find that at several dealers including Abel (w/dvxuser discount) but at the time, it was far and away the lowest price.

NAB dealers don't often have show specials, but a few do.

As for waiting -- prices always go down, and new models always get introduced. Wait as long as you can before buying, but when you need it, buy the best that you can get that's available.

Thanks guys, as always you've all been a great help, which leads to another question, or three.

If I plan to spend the next 18 months or so shooting a couple of features, do I even need to consider the HVX, or is the DVX the camera for me?

Does the HVX shoot in 24P while in HD, or just in video mode? And, would it be worth the money right NOW for what I want to use it for (features)?

If for some un-Godly reason I end up shooting a movie good enough to go to the big screen, how well would it transfer to 35mm film and show on the big screen?

DVX-shot films have been transferred to film and shown in theaters; last year (or was it 2005?) there were five films in the theater at once that were all shot on the DVX. DVX films have twice won "best cinematography" awards at Sundance.

So with that said, HVX footage would be substantially better on the big screen. The DVX can get the job done (depending on how compelling your content is); the HVX is just better.

And yes, the HVX does 24p in HD mode, both in 720p and in 1080p. As to whether it's worth the money to you, only you can answer that question.
