DMX lighting console...?

Hello.

Would someone like to explain me briefly how these kind of light consoles work? I'm familiar with sound mixers but have never used light mixers. What kind of cables do I need between light and the console? How do I connect them together?

How many channels does one light take? Does one light take more than one channel and why? Can I use any kind of lights with these kind of mixers or...? And how do I know which lights can be used with these mixers...?

Here's one mixer from Behringer:

Thank you. :)

These are typically used for theater and live productions, not film work, unless your doing something really unique. As far as hook ups, see manufacture info or talk to a dealer. you can basicly think of these as remote control dimmers.

It's like MIDI for lights.

Some gaffers use them on (stage) film sets, to preset large scenes or do effects. And yes, they have to be DMX lights, or patched thru a DMX dimmer pack. It's not used very often in the film production world.
