DJi - tough little critters

So I just updated the firmware on my Phantom Pro 3 known as Fat Magpie and took her out for a quick buzz around a farm field locally.

I was playing with the various automated intelligent flight modes - waypoints.
Anyhow I flew the route manually and marked off the waypoints, now time to fly the route, I was busy panning the camera when disaster struck, Fat Magpie flew straight into a tall tree, I am putting this down to pilot error, not a DJI bug.

So after a few choice swear words I drove home to check what time the local fire brigade volunteers would be home, and I met a local roofing contractor with a large cherry picker, after some negotiations and lots of laughter he followed me to the crash site and recovered the drone.

Apart from some marks on the rotors she flew again fine, everything seems ok, anyhow the old blades are now scrap but I am still impressed how tough these birds are, the control system cut off the supply to the jammed rotors preventing any damage, same with the gimbal.

A Mavic pro 2 will be purchased when ever these become available but the old phantom is a tough bird.

It sure is!

I got a P3P in December, and after a few flights I somehow got the idea to dolly above a stream. The results were excellent, even under a small bridge. I decided to do it again the next day. Well, wasn't paying attention and the blade took a nick from a branch and she went into the cold water. I was horrified! Went to the phantom forums and learned that a large box with a hairdryer cut through a hole worked for some to dry it out. After an hour, the lens was all fogged up and the bird was really hot. Next tip was encase the bird in rice, which I did for a week. Lo and behold, the lens was clear and the Phantom 3 Pro has flown beautifully ever since…amazing!
