DJI Announces New Ronin-M

will this support an ursa mini?

I'm guessing no. Camera is 5lb, battery will be 2lb and then any good lens will put you over 8lb.

Even if you use a pancake lens, I'm guessing the Ursa Mini will still be too large to balance properly. The little I read about the Nebula 4000 was that people had trouble with things like a GH4, which is nano sized compared to a Ursa Mini.

(It really should be called the Ursa Diet, or Ursa Regular, as the Ursa was a beast and the Ursa Mini is really only "mini" when you compare it to the huge Ursa.)

This is truly designed for a DSLR, not a shoulder camera. The length of a camera is also one of the limiting factors and getting it on a gimbal like the Ronin or MoVI.

Wow might have to pick this up soon. I have a glidecam but am still trying to practice with it to get great steady shots and would love something a little easier to use for weddings. Was thinking of upgrading to the C100 but my D7100 is still a great camera and I should be able to pay of the Ronin-M in a few jobs anyways. For the price I think it will be a great deal

There is a fairly well known Steadicam Operator who has got into making machined bits that allow you to attach Ronin's to steadicam arms. His business name is Cinemilled. He mentioned that he is in the process of making a bit to attach the M5 to a steadi arm today. If you are learning Steadicam you might be interested in Cinemilled stuff.

On another note, DJI is focused on increasing market share and will do almost anything to get it. I wouild expect a response from Freefly as they did when DJI came out with the M10.

^ I have a 3D-printed piece that attaches my Nebula 4000 to the brace arm from my Flycam. It helps A LOT. I get much better motion with that than with a two-handed gimbal.

The M looks nice but the size restrictions appear greater than the Letus Helix Jr (which i have). Also just so there's no misinformation - i've had wonderful support from Letus so far, i can't complain at all.

It's a great price though.

The Jr motors are heavier duty and i've seen an epic on one - the biggest restriction is the physical size rather than weight.

Having said that by the very nature of what they are, gimbals are heavy to hold out there. The Jr allows you to hold closer to your body at a more comfortable height.

That's why there are so many other support systems, like easy rig, around.

cheers

Pre-Ordered mine last night. Super excited to have my first gimbal. I will be using primarily an A7s / A6000 and possibly my 70D which I had planned to sell, not sure now.

$1400? Now that's what I'm talking about. This was a "hmm yeah, maybe!" and now it is an official purchase. STAT. That's awesome!

I also have the Helix Jr. Definitely a bit bummed that this Ronin-M is over $1200 cheaper than the Jr. But yeah, Letus Helix support has been awesome.

Paul, these are the reasons why I purchased the helix jr 2 days ago.
I preferred it over the ronin M also because you can attach it directly to a tripod. No need to detach the camera from the gimbal. I think that it's much more easy to use when working alone.
I think that the rule buy once cry once makes sense.

The Ronin M has a payload that is 3 lbs more than a $4K Movi M5. It fits my current needs just fine which is why I pre-ordered yesterday. If my needs change, I'll upgrade.

Funny that you mention that, as the Ronin-M has a universal quick-release to mount the gimbal with your camera to another support in seconds.
