DIY UltraPod QR MOD 4 Pocket Cameras

So I don't understand why the "lightest weight quick release possible" is so important. That's a lot of work for something that doesn't seem all that needed as a DIY. You can buy a small QL like this:

Excellent question!
1) The Bogen Imaging 323 RC2 is about 6 times the weight of the modified plastic UltraPod release.
2) The MOD'd Ultrapod release is two parts, a super discrete 1/4-20 that connects to the pocket camera (or an included stick-on for iPhone and mobile phones) and then the base of the unit itself.
3) I have a couple of the screw-ins on my Flip Mino HD & on a Kodak Zi8, I also have an iphone and and old Samsung camera phone. These get the stick-on mounts. The Bogen 323 plate is HUGE compared to the little washer sized one on my pocket cameras. In fact, I leave these adapters on camera full time, only removing them if I attach a lanyard to my Mino HD for example.
4) The MOD'd Ultrapod QR actually allows for some friction controlled panning action! Something no other little QR on the Market allows when tripod mounting a non-panning head.
5) For true travel and run-n-gun, my compact tripod slips in a pouch behind my Portabrace vest or into my daypack or carry-on luggage, when weight counts (as it does in fast-light adventure hikes, every little bit bakes a difference.
After all, that's why the Ultrapod itself has become so successful in 20 years. Now I've just enhanced one of their newest products to open up a whole new market in IndiJournalists, travelers etc that want to mount their cameras quickly onto something taller than the Ultrapod
