DIY Spacelight

Hey guys,

Been thinking about this guy for a while and finally started to put the plan into action. Basically I wanted some sort of high wattage muslin spacelight. Something very very soft that I could just stick overhead for a nice base fill.

Basically what it is is a wooden octagon base with three porcelin sockets and 500 watt globes. Each globe will be wired so you can individually flick them on and off. I used 3 shelf supports attached to the base so that the unit can stand on it's own without having to be de-globed every time you want to store it. On the underside of the wooden base I covered it with some roscoe soft silver to get any light coming up to bounce back.

Still working on wiring it, but I just bought a little cookie tin which will fit over the top. I'm going to paint it all flat black and mount the three switches onto the top of the cookie tin...that will give me somewhere to ground it to as well.

As far as mounting, I just have three eye hooks screwed into the base and I'm going to attach three pieces of grip chain to that to a little d-hook at the top.

My only concerns as of now are heat! I'm sure these 500 watt globes in a small enclosed area will put off way too much heat, so I'm starting to think about making the muslin skirt a bit larger than the base, so the heat can escape through the gap at the top.

Still a work in progress, but if people are interested I'll keep posting things as I finish it up.

Flammable material like wood seems like an unfortunate choice for that application where there will be a lot of heat build-up.
And a completely closed surface (of any material) also seems like asking for trouble with heat build-up. I would use an open metal frame to hold the sockets, etc.

While an open metal frame to hold the sockets would be obviously the best way to go, I'm not the best at welding and felt like this was a much much simpler route. However, considering they make covered wagons with 8-16 globes instead of 3 using the exact same idea, it should be fine. I gave it a once over with some high heat black and plan to drill 4-5 1"-1.5" holes around the edges to increase ventilation. Probably will be more than enough...and heck, worse case scenario I swap out the 500 watt globes with 250 watt ones.

I did just add the little cookie tin and wired up some of the switches yesterday. Definitely coming along.

The tin isn't quite in place yet, so there are a few accidental holes that will end up being covered up by it.

I did check out that poker light though and I'm sort of interested in making an additional sock for it that's shorter and more similar to that design. Seems like it would come in handy when you want that soft overhead ambiance, but in a tighter space.

Looks like they're still on sale though, through filmtools.
