DIY Rod Support

Hi guys!

I want to build my own rod support system because I think $200 for a basic support system is pretty expensive and I think it should be doable for just a few bucks. In this case I don't want it to use the industry standard 15mm rods, since in this case it doesn't have to be an industry standard. So basically I'd use any light-weight rods I can find.

I'm going to do some designs and look around for materials soon and I'll show the building process, which is going to be fun since I don't have experience building such things :).

In the meanwhile any suggestions are very much appreciated. Any tips on what I should and should not do?

Thanks!

If you want to do a precision rod support system, it's quite likely you will need metal machining for the camera support and for the sunshade support.

The rods are the easy part, and you can do them in any metal or plastic you want.

Wood might be a choice, but it may not prove as use resistant as metal. In any case you will need machining.

It may not prove as easy, or as fun, as you think if you don't have any building experience. But your curiosity may overcome all problems. Go for it.

Thanks for pointing them out guys, they look great!

Well, I went to the shop today and found enough DIY materials needed to create this puppy. I'm also going to make a shoulder mount for this rig. I'm currently designing the rig in 3D just to make sure everything will fit.

I made it from a couple of Ceramic Tile Cutter: The base where the camera seats , the base where the tripod plate goes, the handle, the piece where the sunshade goes and the 15 mm light iron rods, (however you can use aluminium pipe); the only things that I made are the big rectangular aluminum blocks between the cam and the base, and between the base and the tripod plate, and the rubber handle wich I found from a bicycle store.

The system is very strong and very light weight, I been using it for about 3 years,
last year I made another the same for my HVX. each about US$ 200

The sunshade is made of aluminium, and has a Cokin filter system.
