DIY Rod Rails & Baseplate

Hey Ted, amazing work! Would you consider building me a setup? If so, how much would you charge to make one of these for a Panasonic GH1? I would be interested in the baseplate rod and rails (including shoulder extension), the matte box (with flags), the diy follow focus, and the follow focus whip. Let me know. Thanks!

Ted,

This is simply genius. I was going to attempt to build a rig using square pipe, but this looks so much better. In just need to find some pipe that is 13mm in the states. That shouldn't be too hard, since we don't use the metric system! DOH!

Nekkron, these are stainless pipes used for curtains, you'll probably find this in home improvement stores. This is very close or similar in diameter to aluminum ones for TV and radio antennas. I have both steel and aluminum ones and i interchange them using the same clamp/block.

The online catalog does not link well. But it is very easy to search with a very simple Denny's-menu of pictures and catagories. Go to the main page http://www.mcmaster.com/#. Go down the page to raw materials. Select metals. Select aluminum. Select rods and discs. Select 15mm.

Thank you. Found it.
Yes. That website was designed by someone that wanted to make sure no one links to, or shares links to their products.
Now that's a new business strategy if I ever heard of one.

Hey Teddy, Awesome! I've been checking out your DIY posts and they are genius man. It's really inspired me to make my own gear (especially considering I'm always feeling a bit pinched from buying lenses, etc.). I know this is a real newbie question (appropriate since it is my 1st real DIY project), but what type of a cutting tool should I be using to make the rod rails & baseplate project. I probably have access to a metal work shop since I am a high school teacher... Thanks!

Great, thanks Teddy! I guess the other piece of equipment would be a riveting gun right? I have access to one of those as well.

Hello

I am building a DIY shoulder rig. I found 15mm rails here :
http://cgi.ebay.com/STAINLESS-STEEL-TUBE-15mm-OD-x-600mm-LONG-1-5mm-W-Brush-/390302916620

I am working on the camera support right now but I wonder how to screw the quick release adapter to the rig ?
I am looking at this adapter : http://www.manfrotto.com/product/83...PTATEUR_PLATEAU_RAPIDE_PLAT+NIVEAUX_A_BE+ULLE
It has a 1/4" screw on the bottom of it.
I guess I will have a plate with holes in it, did you use this kind of piece with a 1/4" screw ? I know that these aren't threaded on all the length.

Feel free to suggest other solutions for the adapter as well.

Thanks for all your great projects !

Hi y'all!

Just moved in to big ol' Texas!
I'm checkin the nearby home depots and walmarts for local stuff to be able to make it easy to source parts for our DIYs!
Stay tuned.

;-)

teddy, I've read most of the stuff you have submitted and have even made some of it. I was looking into where to get the framing, and was wondering where you got it. I've tried a couple of the local box stores home depot and Menards and they didn't have anything. If there is anyway you could lend hand to this that would be great.

Hey Teddy,
Could you show us a pic of where and how you placed the 5th nut for the tripod's QR to screw into? I can't figure out exactly how you screw it to the baseplate. Always in awe of the ingenuity.

Were you able to find any of the "Aluminum tube for framing glass walls" ??? I'm going to be making a rail system very soon. Thanks so much
