DIY ring light rip-off

I bought a 48 LED "UFO light" off ebay a few weeks ago so I can make a DIY ring light out of it. I think I paid $7 for it, shipped. Then while browsing ebay today I found this, such a rip-off...

It's IDENTICAL to what I bought, they just slipped it over the mic and called it a day (which is a pretty hokey way of mounting it, I've gotta say).

This is what I bought and am in the process of adapting to fit my camera...

Unbelievable...

I know ebay links are a no-no, but I thought it was worth posting in order to expose this scam. Maybe this would even be more appropriate in the marketplace? Anyhow, don't spend $50 on that thing!

Why would you stick a ringlight on the microphone?! this compleatly voids the point of having one.....

I cut out the middle of mine and glued a 72mm Cokin filter ring to it so I can thread it onto my DVX. But now there is nowhere for the batteries to go, so I've gotta mount a battery holder on the outside, which I may do tonight.

Will it be useful? Maybe, but more than anything it's just a fun little DIY project for very little money.

FloLights is the place that's selling this light for $149

Between that and the ebay guy... I just can't believe there are SO many suckers in the world.

Hey remember our $9.99 "router speed controller" from Harbor Freight? The thing that tons of us on here are using as a dimmer? Well go to ebay and type in "arri dimmer" and you'll find THIS GUY *CLICK* who has sold over 200 of these things to unsuspecting people, who would be better off had they known about DVXuser.

What I really hate about that particular ebay seller... is that he probably learned about that from us... and then decided "what a great business... ripping off the ignorant." :)

Prompter People's FLO500 LED isn't 5600k either, its 4300K

Flolight is selling a 3 dollar plastic ledlight for 149 dollar?
With a presentation video? I never buy anything from that company, now we know how they do it.
Unbelievable.

I just got mine in the mail a few days ago. I will tell right off the bat that they are not made very well. (for $2.00 I did not expect much). they are very light weight though. With some easy DIY applications you could put these things almost anywhere. I am ordering a few more this week. They do emit a great amount of light. I turned out the lights and 1 of them lit the entire room. I really don't understand color temps. etc. I will post some footage this week. Great cheap find. It is better to order at least 5 of them because they will need to be handled with TLC.

I've used a similar type of lights for some college news stuff at night. They don't white balance well, let me see if I can find a link...

there's this video from 0:06 to 0:10 http://blip.tv/play/gYgr1pF8ie5J
my boss did this one, but it was the quickest I could find.

EDIT

And here is a 10 second clip I had on my hardrive for another example. I did white balance, this is just how they look. (Camera - DVX 100b)

I've seen them, or some other company selling the camping ring-light for big bucks, defend themselves on forums before. Maybe it was dvinfo, but they claim that while their light may appear to be the same as the 3-dollar light, it's actually different and that they've replaced all the leds with high powered color corrected ones.

Is this true? I don't know, but these camping lights have been around for a while and the general reaction is the same as yours.
