DIY Redhead Dimmers?

Hi, anyone know anything about making dimmers for reheads? They cost £50 each for the cheap Chinese ones, surely they can't be too difficult to make with a little electronics knowledge.

Is there some special component in these that demands such high prices for something so simple?

Many people on this side of the pond use a speed control for a router: http://www.harborfreight.com/router-speed-control-43060.html I am not sure where you would find this in the UK(240 volts @50Hz) but surely there must be a discount hardware. Remember you will change the colour temp of the instrument when you dim it.

I thought I'd mention that if you search ebay you can grab a router speed controller for about $3-4 cheaper

I think he is in the UK Nick. Different voltage: 220-240v 50Hz.
