DIY rail brackets

Does anybody know of a cheap source of suitable plastic for making rail brackets? Thought of using 20mm kitchen cutting boards, but they're insanely expensive where I live so goes against the whole el cheapo spirit...

Plastic is surprisingly expensive. I've looked at fabricating some items from plastic and then decided against it because of the cost. You may be better off with aluminum. But if you need plastic, go to tapplastics.com

For metals, look at Online metals.com. They have a large selection and you don't have to buy full lengths or sheets.

If you can find a local plastics supply house, go and ask for delrin, nylon or polycarbonate remnants. You should be able to get some small pieces that are perfect for these types of rail parts.

Cheers,
Pete

I love DIY projects, but in this case, why wouldn't you use Speedrail fittings. In 1 1/4", they average less than $10 ea.

1st of all because like to make it myself. Second, there is so much gear I need, i.e. jib, steadycam, follow focus, remote follow focus etc. so I really need to be firm in my DIY approach to be able to afford everything. Lastly, I can't get them here in Denmark. Doing everything myself pays for tools, lenses, cameras etc

@c3hammer: thanks for the tip! I called up a plastic supplier and could get the bits I needed for a small donation to their coffee pot. Perfect!

Sweet ulrikplate !!!

Next is to hobnob around the back door of some small cnc machine shops with a case of Tuborg :)

I'm sure you can make some friends in the right way to get a little more creative. I've been in the composites, cnc and design business for 25 years. There's never been a time when someone came by with a 6 pack of cold beer on friday night that I didn't invite in to have a look at their hobby :)

Cheers,
Pete
