DIY PC for video editing

Hey all

I'm in the process of getting a new cpu for video editing and at the moment I've listed down the stuff I need for the cpu but I'm unsure about some of them. I'll be using this cpu with Adobe Premiere CS3 with a blackmagic card in future as an add on.

- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
- 4gb RAM
- 320gb SATA HDD 7200rpm (good enough for 1080p HD?)
- OS Windows XP sp2 (I'd prefer this than Vista but would you recommend it?)
- nVidia 8600 GTS (is a good graphic card necessary for playing back Hi Def dvds and movie clips?)
- PCI Express slots for future blackmagic card add on (I'm looking at Decklink HD Extreme. How many slots do I need?)
- 4 x usb 2.0, 2 x firewire 400
- disc drive (what should I get? how much does a blu-ray burner+reader costs these days? Or should I simply get a normal dvd-rom/rw drive?)

Also, should I move on to 2K editing (scarlet camera and all) in future, what upgrades do I need to invest in? More storage space (raid drive?) and more memory?

Thanks for helping out!

You'll need/want a Raid array. If not for the speed, for the piece of mind when a drive dies, your stuff is still safe.

There are several methods, it depends on which is right for you. I have 3 200gig drives in my tower with a RocketRaid card, set up as a Raid 5 array. This gives me the security of knowing that the data is redundant, and spread over all disks. If one dies, I just plug in a new HDD and hit rebuild. Early on, I made the mistake of just setting up a Raid 0+1. One drive died, and everything was gone. Now, there are also external raid setups, but I have no actual expeience with them.
