hey guys

i have a problem - i bought a sennheiser MKE300, and there ain't no place on my DVX body for the minijack. So - would I be damaging anything if I bought an XLR plug, chopped off the MKE's minijack and soldered the plug to the MKE cable?

Advice would really be appreciated.

Cheers

I think they sell adapters, when you say minijack, you mean the 1/8th inch style headphone jack? I think the adapters are like 6$ on b&h. I don't think you'd have a problem with what you want to do, but to be on the safe side, I think I would justspring for the adapter.

Unless you're pretty proficienat at soldering, and use high quality connectors and wire, I would suggest buying a pre made adapter. If you decide to do it yourself, I don't think you'll harm anything though. Make sure to use balanced cable, and switchcraft connectors.

that wouldnt work - you have to convert 48ph to 3 v bias - return the mike and buy better , the senheiser name dont make this mike better

this is even worse , since the rode are used Chinese capsule which are made buy exploitation of people paying them very low wages :-)

I used an ATR55 for a while. It has a 1/8 jack. The adapter I bought to convert it to xlr worked great. I got it at Radio Shack.

It amazes me that these threads pop up all the time... where people are struggling to find a way to defeat the DVX's single best quality. More then any other detail on the DVX... it's the AUDIO that sets this camera apart from the competition. You can find a million threads of argument about the visual quality of this camera over that... but there 'aint ONE where somebody tries to argue another cams superiority over the DVX's audio.

Would you say that movies are 95% visual and only 5% sound?

I'd argue that it's 70% sound and only 30% visual. Watch "The Village" with the sound down... it's just some kids walking around slowly in the woods... or take the score off "Dances with Wolves"... it's just 2 minute pans across open plain. I'll always be amazed that people try to find a way to use a $100 mic with a $3400 camera... even a little Oktava is only $193 and it's able to utilize the DVX's excellent audio section. The very lowest shotgun I'd consider for a DVX is the AT897... and if somebody can somehow come up with the cash the 4073a will give them an outdoor audio solution where the sound is commensurate with the picture.

. . .and yet how could a camera which records such fantastic audio which is better than any other handheld camera available have such a horrible headphone monitor that is delayed and hissy?

well you can have you cake, you just can't eat it too. for a working sound mixer (me) the headphone monitor is the most dissapointing aspect of this camera. otherwise, i LOVE it.

now, there's something they should have fixed by the time the new camera comes out.

you can use the rca outs , its much cleaner signal but it still has delay
and if we are talking audio for small dv , the z1 has much better audio stage (imo) , but also has very low headphone stage

Oleg,

Do you know of anyone over here in the states that will make an ENG cable with RCA instead of a stereo miniplug for a return feed? Do you think Trew/Remote Audio could make something like this in a breakaway to interface with my existing setup of 15 and 50 foot betacam cable? Or, is there some quirky bias thing I should know about? Thanks.

Brian... it's a ***** that Panasonic changed the headphone out from the standard to the A model... on the original DVX the headphone out is as clean as a CD player... and no delay.

I'd still trade my DVX for your's... if nothing else just for the ultra-slow crawl zoom that original DVX's do not have... but since I'm an audio guy I get a little satisfaction in my lack of new audio issues.

I've got a buddy with the A model and the first time I heard the delay it freaked me out... just try monitoring your own audio with headphones as you narrate something. Maybe I'm an idiot but I couldn't force my brain to simultaneously monitor AND ignore my own delayed voice while I tried to sound natural during narration... I finally just put the headphones down. On the old DVX it sounds like the headphones aren't even there... you don't even realize that they were isolating you from the room until your turn the camera off... and everything... including your own voice goes silent.

The Z1 is five grand. I didn't mean to say that the DVX has the best audio of any camera... just of the cams anywhere near it's class. If anything goes then pop on a mixpre for line-in and then compare what you get with the Z1... phfffffpt!

its just 2 rca to mini pl feemale adapter , you don't need to make new tail , just make sure you are using right angle rcas for that matter since you can brake easily the connectors plate if you accidentally hit the connectors , be sure that you have enough return level on your mixer ( my sd 442 don't have enough to match the -10dbv signal to the mixer out)
i think Trew can do it , but they expensive , try to find some local shlepper if you don't solder by your self , of course this would work if your return is stereophonic one , because some snakes where made for mono return from the camera , if so you have to change the plugs ,

didn't get ,simple English please
the z-1 is in the same class for dv work , ok it can record hd as well ( thats the extra grand or 2:-))
about the privies model ,and the current , i can put a bet there is nothing changed except the shmocks at panasonic added simple amp ( bad design) in line with the privies without redesign all the headphones audio flow , ok 3grand , what do you expect:-)

i'm not technically savvy. i can't return the mic easily either - will a standard, purchased adapter provide the conversion you mentioned?

thanks

no
but you can find all the nessery parts at radio shack ( might be that they carry adapters like that )
then find some local guy that can do it with the schems you have on the site i did post
