DIY Loupe/Finder for VDSLR

Hm, that's an interesting idea and it should be just as effective. Maybe I will consider doing that to mine too. I think however I want to give the rails system a try, then the FF and finally the mattebox (as the instructions just got posted today - thanks for that too Ted).

Hahaha! wow! you'll be busy! a tip on the rail system.

You might find the one I used for the rail block in a shop/store specializing in glass/sliding door services.

For the rod, for stainless steel you'll have unlimited supply in a home improvement shop. Look for curtain rods. In my country they are "standard" 13mm curtain rods.

For aluminum tubes, its also around 13mm, these are used for making antennas. For TV and Radio.

Hahaha, well I am excited to work on these projects. I think for me the rail block and FF will be the most important. That one I may need some help in. Rods are typically 15mm right? I will be using the FF design that you have come up with, however if I do end up purchasing a device down the road, I would like it to be able to mount on.

Now, just because I don't really have any previous experience with rail systems, how exactly do they work? Does it mount on the camera, which then mounts onto a quick release plate?

Kegan

In the smaller rail systems the rod holder is screwed under the camera. Under the rod holder are standard holes to allow you to screw your tripod quick release plate.

In other versions like what i currently made, the rod holder has a quick release plate on top for you to quickly put on/remove your camera. Underneath are standard holes to allow you to screw your tripod quick release plate.

Great vid! Excellent mix of shots. So what DIY solution did you use for the underwater housing in the cave? :cheesy:

Also, what jib did you use for that?

I probably would have used more slider/skater/dolly shots rather than pans because of the "jello" effect. But, again, a great vid and sure the tourism board loved it!

Thanks guys,

The housing wasn't DIY -BUT a cheap dicapac.

I used a DIY 13 foot jib made from aluminum tubing. Don't have pics though.

I found the jello effect not so much a problem because I shot the pans real slow. I just sped it up in the edit to 110-120 % to go with the music.

Anyone here have an online parts list? In particular, I'm having trouble finding the baffles and glass that fit well. I'd love it if someone could point me to an online retailer with these items.

Thanks in advance.

Wallbanger,

The thing with these parts is they are very cheap Chinese and probably Philippine made plastics and its hard to look for exact same parts online. I really had to spend a lil time at the home department in a mall to find the small containers for it.

A tip, find first a loupe that measures 2.5 inch WITHIN the rim frame.
I'd look for one with a strong kind of plastic rim not the metal one.

Then the tubes would follow. I found a pvc coupling that works. You can use that instead of the baffle vent.

Then find a squarish plastic container that will encompass the LCD.

Hope this helps.

When I don`t find the parts, I make the parts.

Use black corrugated cardboard and black tape.

The eye cup is the Large eye cup that came whit my old Panasonic Pro AG-DVC30 , which I sold two years ago, I'm still thinking a way to mount the viewfinder, at first I will use rubbers bands and then perhaps make a mount adapter that comes from the accessory shoe mount of the camera..

Hey Teddy--
What are your thoughts on creating a DIY Loupe for the EVF on a GH-1 as opposed to the LCD?
I have achromats and such from my DIY 35mm days--so after reading this thread, I held up some to the LCD, however the resolution isn't high enough to hold up image quality, I end up seeing pixel separation, another words , it's actually harder to pull focus this way. I know the 7D has a higher res. LCD so for that it must work fine. But I feel that the EVF(LVF) in GH1 is far sharper an image than the LCD.

Do you think there is a way to magnify that- in fact I wouldn't mind just an eye cup that would attach to it- not even neccessarily with any magnification- just ergonomaically the GH-1 LVF isn't too comfy.

Any thoughts are appreciated from anyone

thanks!!

theres actually a product i've seen somewhere that actually shoots the viewfinder image and shows the image onto a large LCD. Dang! i forgot what its called.
