DIY LCD Monitor from Laptop Display

Well, I'm going to try to make my own production monitor from an LCD panel I just removed from my old IBM Thinkpad T21.

First let me say that I have already ordered this awesome production monitor:

BUT

I had this old laptop and felt like trying to make a monitor using the LCD panel. Especially when I saw that these kits are just laptop LCD displays, paired with controllers to run them.

And sure I know I can get a cheap WS LCD monitor for less than $150 brand new (http://www.provantage.com/monitors~67DMON__0.htm) but that's not the goal here. :)

I want to make a monitor. It's really that simple and I'm also thinking about steampunking it. http://steampunkworkshop.com/lcd.shtml

OK so I got the LCD display out pretty easily and I can see that it is made by Hyundai (go figure) and it has a model number so I'm just finding out more info about this panel right now and then I can decide how to proceed with it.

I'll update this as I'm working through it.

Cheers!

I think that's awesome!

And that steampunk monitor is a thing of beauty. It's given me a ton of film ideas and a whole lot of passion for making my own props! :)

Thanks! :) I'm looking forward to getting this working and creating something unique. :)

That steampunk guy is amazing. I love his conversion of the school bus into a victorian themed RV. :)

Any photos of the props you've created?

I'm going to steampunk my DVX100b when the time is right. :)

Cheers!

I'm getting the impression that I can use the inverter that I pulled out with the LCD panel and I can use nearly any button board. So then I just need to settle on a controller.
Right now, it looks like I can use this one:

But I want to find one for under $100. So we'll see.

Looks like you can get these LCD Panels for as low as $20 is anyone is interested:

I saw some cheap on ebay too but this site has them pretty cheap as well.

Well I think I'm going to abandon ordering from AgilentPixel.com. Shipping is $32 for a little controller and they don't respond to inquiries via their contact form or on the forum. So I'll buy one elsewhere.

Agilentpixel is a new website and I've never heard of them or from them before very recently. I wasn't able to find any info anywhere about anybody who has bought from them either. I'd say caveat emptor

I think you are right. I saw a posting from them over at the HV20 forum but it seems no one there had bought from them yet but were engaging in a conversation about what they carry.

I've got some bids on some LCD TVs on Ebay with smashed LCD panels. I'll pull a controller out of one of those and see how it goes. They are pretty cheap.

Hi:
I setup my own online store only few months ago but I work as a supplier for several web sites for years and have hundreds of buyers all around the world (even Africa). Pls send email (agilentpixel@hotmail.com) to me and I can give you some contacts to check me credit.

Now I'm getting all out of hand. Oh the deals they have on evilbay (ebay)! Bought a nice little LCD controller that should work with my lcd screen for $45 (free shipping) and it comes with the button board. I actually did pull the inverter for my LCD screen from my laptop but I think it was faulty but no worries, a new exact model is only $7 (and free shipping) on evilbay. And if that wasn't enough I scored a whole 15" widescreen LCD HDTV in need of a new inverter for only $42 (total with shipping). The inverter I can get for $10-20 or $3 if I get inverters using a method I found on instructables.com Sooooo now I'll have some fun building projects on my hand. I'm looking forward to making a nice portable case for the HDTV so it can also be used a production monitor.
