DIY Lavalier/Lapel Mic tutorial?

Thinking of doing a DIY vid for how I built my phantom powered lapel mic, I use it into my USB interface to my laptop to record the audio for my vids. All in the build only cost me about $5, the catch is you need a device that can provide phantom power. Would you guys be keen on such a tutorial? It does involve a bit of soldering and working with components like resistors. I used the mic to record the vocals for this video.

Nice dog movies, but I did't see anything about microphones?

THe definitive electret to phantom XLR adapter circuit is the one published by Rick Chinn..

The web page talks about PZM microphones, but in reality, an electret capsule is the same no matter how you deploy it.

As I mentioned in the original post I posted the video to demonstrate what quality you could get from a DIY lapel mic, I love DIY so prefer to build something if I can. Also to get entry level lapel mics maybe cheap for someone in the US or EU, but where I come from, South Africa, you can triple the costs of whatever you find on Amazon for us to get it. Just ordered an $8 remote camera timer from Amazon and it cost me nearly $30 after delivery and import costs.

@jmarshallplz, I agree with you. I would much rather DIY than buy something. And indeed, for casual use, those inexpensive electret microphone capsules make pretty good lapel mics. But they typically have too much self-noise (hiss) for real quality work.

I have visited your country twice, and I agree about availability. I had a hard enough time even finding fresh AA cells on our tour. Next time, I will just bring them with me. :-(

And it didn't help that my debit card was stolen right out of my hand by a con-artist right in the middle of the giant shopping center in Sandton City.

I've been thinking the same, regarding a DIY lapel, however, my idea is to make an XLR adapter to 3.5mm audio jack (I found a few you can buy from I think it was Shure and Sennheiser - can't remember) and then plugging my Audio Technica ATR3055 into it - or a Giant Squid. I can then use it with my DR-40. My little ATR gives quite good audio I think.

@jmarshallplz Some things like camera timers you are best to just order via ebay, get some chinese version with free shipping. The stuff is usually very functional but wont last years of real world use.

I'm making a short list of gear I will be purchasing, and looking at some of the shipping charges, I will have to find a means to get everything in one place otherwise I might as well fly to the USA to buy the stuff.

@Richard Crowley I've heard...HAHAHAHHA, ok, rather I have read good things about the Transsound Electrects but haven't any personal experience. http://www.transsound.net/

@Inprogress - I'm from Port Elizabeth too. Have you ordered from China off ebay? How does getting it though customs go? Any extra charge?
