DIY IndieSlider...

gravity is great ... as long you can use it.
this way , no low shooting under length required by the wire.
what about a spring ?

You could still perform low shots by flipping the string (red) to the other side of the pulley & running it over something else (blue) like this (the yellow is the weight):

Yes, you can attach the blue part to the slider and fold it down for transport. To make it work you just have to keep friction as low as possible i.e. all deflection pulleys have to be ones with ball bearings.

Does anyone have an idea how to order the same parts suggested for less than £170

I have browsed the forum and contacted igus.co.uk. I find people such as Robin Davies-Rollinson from the UK ordering for £100, yet my order is over £170.

What am I doing different that is costing me more!?

Just a quick question to the group:
For years people have been sliding by hand (myself included), so I ask, are people having trouble sliding smoothly? If you are, why? Have you adjusted the carriage properly?

I wonder, because it seems to me that some of these ideas make things more complicated then they need to be. Am I missing something here?

Postmaster had the great idea of just hooking a bungee cord to the carriage and streching it (pull on it). You get a really smooth start & stop...and it's as simple as that.

the bungee stuff is at least as old as the fluide head invention, but old recipee tends to vanish as new technolgy comes in.
(remember the "rope under the foot" trick to get steady shot ? How many times have you used it ?)

So, a rope with a pully & weight is new? :undecided

I don't know but I find it hard to get a constant and slow movement over a longer length. It has nothing to do with the hardware but with my arms and for longer slides my body that has to smoothly move along. I guess practise is the key. I'll definitely try the rubber band trick to smoothen out my moves.

Other than that it's just fun to automate something. We're lazy. You can concentrate on something else while the slider does it's work. You can even appear in your own film without the need for a camera man. And of course in my case there's always the demand to compensate for missing skills :cheesy:

Just a heads up on anyone ordering, I just got off the phone with them and ordered the original kit. They are waiting for a new shipment of the W (with holes) and S (without holes) rails at the moment. The lead time was 4 weeks from today, but the person I talked with felt pretty sure they'd see the parts in two weeks.

I mention this in case anyone wants to get in line and not have to wait longer in case they run out again.

And as everyone else has said, thank you so much for this find. This is PERFECT for one of the projects I am working on!

I just visited the configurator at http://www.igus.co.uk/wpck/default.aspx?PageNr=2004&scroll=0&step=1

A 1 m long rail with 100 mm carriage costs 102 EUR or 96 GBP without VAT and shipping.
Thanks for the response Martin, for some strange reason when I enter the details it costs 173 GPB
option 1 (Shaft diameter) 16mm
option 2 (Rail width) 60mm
option 3 (Carridge length) 100mm
option 4 (No. Carridges) 1
option 5 (Rail length) 1000mm

Result: Still 172 GBP!

Strange! Any ideas why this is? Do I have to pay more because I am from Nottingham?
Very wierd! I notice that your order has a WK and mine doesn't . Maybe I should just try and quote this product number and call them.

EDIT :I though I would try and quote the product number as that seemed to be the obvious answer. Even this didn't work as I was told that whether I order WK-16-60-10 or the rail and carridge seperate makes no difference as the price is still the same. Any chance you could help me save this difference Martin?

Why, oh why are you doing this to me icus, I want my Zaza slider for 100 EUR

That's what I make it as well, plus 17.5% VAT, that's £203.52, with free delivery (any order over £100).

Or equivalent to $326 at current exchange rates. A bit odd for kit made in Germany & shipped closer than the U.S. where it appears to cost half as much?

I'm very sorry can it be that they have local prices and the website detects where you're coming from? I see the prices in Euros on the UK page linked above and there's no option to change that to Pounds. You on the other hand see Pounds.

I've just tried to get my sister who lives in Kent to order one through the link you provided and for some reason the link has stopped working. Are you based in London? Maybe if I get someone who lives in London to order one it will be the same quote you have with Euros? Kent is pretty close to London so that might work.

I mean the advantage is manual rig for timelapse. If you setup a weight that pulls the rig slow enough, you could potentially do a sliding dolly move without computer automation.

In other news, I'll be returning and swapping out some parts... details to come.

Great suggestion. That will work! I just did a quick (or rather slow) test and was able to get a constant 0.3 mm/s move (can you do that manually Joe? [Zaza] :2vrolijk_08:). It requires a gentle start push to overcome the friction but then it just creeps along the rail.

Igus recently introduced the WJRM Hybrid linear bearing which significantly reduces the friction. It would be great if they would offer those hybrid pillow blocks for the 16 mm DryLin W rail.

Annother suggestion:
My small camcorder requires a weight around 470g but people with larger equipment could save weight by using a block and tackle system.

Seems like every country has it's own list price
Your order looks perfect to me if you want a 1 m long, 16 mm rail with 100 mm long carriage (= THE ZaZa slider).

Yes, but it seems that the axis is only 10mm diameter, not supposed to be 16?

generally in my country are the highest prices

edit:
zaza slider has adjustable clearance ?

Martin, looks like the problem with the new hybrid is mounting it. I'd believe you'd want the wheel on the top, but if you did that, the mounting holes will be on the sides. You'd need some sort of L adapter that could also raise it up and get it over that little hump that the wheel is inside.

BUT, very cool, and probably doable!
