DIY IndieSlider...

Hey Neal! I want to see some footage with your slider....and I missed you in this last fest. Now you HAVE to make a film for the next one. (with sliding shot)

I wrote a script for LossFest, but had no time to shoot it. I'm looking forward to the next fest as I'm anxious to do another film.

Here is a shot I did with the ZazaSlider that I used for a scene transition in my TwilightFest entry - THE CONTRACT.

NICE!!

This wasn't in the original version for the fest though...right? Did you make another cut of the film? I'd love to see it!

Thanks, guys.

Nope, it didn't make the cut in the original, as I was shaving as much as possible to get down to the 6 minutes cap.

PM sent regarding the newest cut of the film.

Thank you ZAZA for this entire thread, along with everyone else who contributed. Im breaking out the checkbook tomorrow.

One note on having a Crank Operated version. I DID see some Crank Machinery on the Igus Site. It might be worth talking to them abuot. It is a very simple threaded screw assembly. If you want to try something down and dirty. Two VERY SIMPLE pully's attatched at either end, with a length of rope on each attaching to either side of the carriage will do the trick. As one Gathers the line, the other will let it out. The size of the pully will help determine the speed at which it gathers/lets out the line. (not to mention how fast you Crank it). Basically it is a tug of war but with pully's. You can take this one step further with an additional pully in the center and span the line between them all. It is simple physics. This way, you can Crank, pan and tilt it, from one location.

They are sold at any TCS Tractor supply or lawn mower repair shop. Drill a hole in the side for a handle.

This might make break down a little more complex to do, but, it will work. I have used this basic Three pully system on a home-made Track Dolly before. I can sit on the dolly and move it back and fourth by myself, with me and the camera on it. (camera shots suffer a bit cause I only have two hands)

Only problem with the screw system is its very slow, you would have to turn the hand wheel hundreds of times to move the camera from one end to the other.

A toothed timing belt and some pulleys would also work, with the possibility of motor/motion control aswell...

I believe their ZLW is the normal W rail and carriage slider with a belt attached for a handcrank or motor driven slider. It costs about 4x more than the normal W rail and carriage slider, though.

They also have a leadscrew driven one but your arms would get tired very fast if you tried to handcrank it.

Thank god i found this website.

I did a search online for bearings and found www.igus.com.
I was about to order WS-10-40-100 AND WW-10-40-10.
The parts number on the first page is that for the HD version or the standard.

HD or Standard? I don't know what you're asking? The part numbers I posted are pretty heavy duty...rated to take over 500lbs. I believe.

I've had NO problem with a DVX100b/M2/Nikon lens/FF rig on this thing.

Hope that helps.

What I tried to ask is: if the original glidtrack from www.glidetrack.com is the same dimensions as the one you build or a bit slimmer?

WWW.GLIDETRACK.COM have a Glidetrack HD model for $450.00, it is the havy duty model.
Then they have the Glidetrack SD model for $299.00.
you see, I want to know if i can get buy with the slimer model (40mm wide track and 1 m long)
I have the Sony fx1 and i am not planing on adding anything to it.

I hope you can understand me.
I aplogezie in advance my english is not the best.

bahaha still can't believe those glidetrack guys are actually trying to sell those... what a rip!

just get exactly what Zaza says in the first post. It will work great with your Fx1 and you'll have your very own "glidetrack"

I'm sorry... I didn't know glidetrack was offering different models now. DM is right and the one I have listed is what glidetrack considers "HD". Get that and you'll have no problems now...or in the future.

When I got to the end of the slider, I moved it over and continued the slide shot.

Setup in less than 2 minutes. Breakdown in less then a minute.

I was about to get funky with it, but as I was browsing today at HD, I found some 3-way C-clamps and brought them home to meet igus.
Well...!!!
it turns out that my slider mounted well and sturdy onto 2 of my mic stands.

I have some test footage up from my slider that I recorded today.
The 2 mic stands are compact, light weight, and easy to carry, yet sturdy enough.

I have attached pictures of what the clamps look like, and mounted on the mic stands.

Also, I recorded a little with it today and here is the footage on vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/3770606

or on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvkrIMvPN68&feature=channel_page

Yesterday I called Igus in the US and was forwarded to their Canadian office - makes sense, I'm Canadian.

Within 5 minutes I had place my order (per Zaza's parts list) and had confirmation of my order by email.

I got to work this morning and received another email stating that it had just been shipped. That was about 8am EST. At 12:10pm PST today I received a long cardboard box with the rail and carriage.

Unbelievably prompt service and great to deal with. Couldn't have been easier and just in time for the weekend!

Yes... they are a great company to deal with...and fast! They even bill you & if you pay within 10 days, you can save another 2% on the order. (every bit counts)

We'll all expect to see some footage come Monday...

I ordered mine yesterday @ about 2:45pm. Already arrive. Ordering took 3mins and shipping less than a day. (RI > NY) Amazing service from IGUS. Feels like Xmas @home :) Gotta shoot tomorrow. So Sunday I will make Mod. Video Tests Next week. Thanks again ZaZa.
