I posted this by mistake in Hardware.

I made the top adjustable. Tilts up and down. I use female Velcro on my camera so I don't get stuck on anything while I'm shooting.

List:
- any stiff material - black corrugated plastic works really good and is cheap at Pearls
- Velcro
- Printer
- Tape

Instructions:
1. Print out PDF - HVX FRECH FLAGS.pdf
2. Cut out the shapes
3. Tape to your material
4. Cut out the shapes and fold along the dotted lines
5. Add Velcro

One of the main purposes of a matte box is to make your camera look more professional, i.e. impressive. For all the Keifer Sutherlands out there. So maybe some kind of black rubber edging or even some black gaff, judiciously applied, might make the rig look a little prettier.

That said I may end up making one of these 'cause it certainly looks better than a piece of blackwrap taped to the lens hood. Have you noticed the difference, flare-wise?

This was primarily built for function and was light enough to go on my steadicam. It works the same if built with cardboard and gaff tape. The top is fully adjustable and the sides have limited function, but gives the camera that matte box "look". I think it works better for flare than the flags on a standard matte box since it works with the stock lens hood that is much smaller. Works as an extension. I designed this for the DVX User community as thanks for all the advice. I hope I can save everyone $1,200. I'm really interested in what other members will do with my design.

Great design! I myself made my side flags for my matte box. In fact I did alot of custom work on the matte box itself as well. I'm light tight, use inexpensive Cokin-P filters, have top and side flags, and spent under $300usd...that includes somewhere between 15 and 20 filters.

It's a good addition, flags that is....you don't need it til' you need it, lol...and often people don't realize they need it...it's best to build it, slap it on, and only take it off when you need to get the camera in a tight place.
