I am working on some diy 150w HMI fresnels based off of Cool Light's tutorial in his blog. What I have is an old Kliegl 650w fresnel, a g12 ceramic socket, a cool lights 150w hmi 5600k bulb, and two different ballasts.
The first ballast is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=120257730827
Its spec sheet says it is 120/240v (V), 175 (W), 1.36/0.68 (A). The problem with this ballast is it causes a flicker in the bulb with a color change each time it flickers. It isnt like a fluorescent flicker, it creates more of a candle flicker-like the filliment is fluctuating inside the bulb. I thought maybe the bulb needed to be worked in so I let it run for 3hours and the flicker continued (I have only ever rented HMI, so I have never had to work in a bulb.) I figured it must be caused by the slight over wattage in the ballast 175ballast-150bulb, even though they say it can handle a 150w bulb.
The second ballast is: http://www.ballastwise.com/item.asp?PID=126&FID=17&level=1. Its spec sheet says it is 120 (V), 160 (W), 1.48 (A). The problem with this ballast is that it won't fire up. I think it might not be a pulse start ballast. If that is the case where can I get a pulse start for this ballast?
Anyone got any ideas as to what I am doing wrong, or any place to find the right ballast.
