DIY Gearless Follow Focus

Started working on my LCDVF yesterday. Should be finished tomorrow and I'll post pics.

Burned the hell out of my hand on a soldering iron. THAT will be the pic to post :D

To make the gearless FF i made fully functional it must have a whip, especially for those dolly moves and when using the plywood skater...While sitting inside the toilet I was able to see under the sink and saw the flexible hose!

Hey, Teddy. 'Bout to build my Teddybear whip!

Do you know what the official name of that hose is? I'm trying to look it up, but my guesses aren't doing me much good.

Thanks!

Edit: Wait! http://www.homedepot.com/Plumbing-P...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 Is this it?

ok, don't laugh, -its the hose under the toilet. -or sink. I googled it and this is what i got thats similar to what I'm using.

it comes in diff lengths but mines i think around 15 inches.

There are plastic and nylon wrapped, you should get the stainless wrapped as it doesnt twist and transmits minute adjustments directly to the other end.

p.s. just noted youre in Dallas, I will be there to be with my wife who lives in Allen. Will bring my stuff to help you guys better. ;-)

Haha! just saw your edit; yeah, I think thats what it looks like BUT im not sure if the polymer is same as the "steel wrap" that i see in what i used.

with mine its looks and feel stainless steel like finish. -but i tested it with a magnet it doesnt stick.

I took a trip to Home Depot a few days ago and gambled $5 on what looks to be the same thing you bought.

It's perfect! Absolutely no vertical twist.

Once I finish this stupid follow focus, I'll attach it and give it a test drive. My friction-based follow focus is giving me trouble.

Wow amazing stuff Teddybear, i need to learn to become more handy in the work shed if i had one lol

Question: I already have a jag35 d3 follow focus and am in need of a whip focus. anyway i can modify ur DIY whip to fit this particular FF?

Here is a link to the FF:

Here is the compatible crank (which i dont want):
http://www.dfocussystem.com/crank.html

Any help would be great! thanks!

BTW: I dont have access to many tools, anyway i can get those small L brackets without having to actually make them?

Jona,

Yes you can do that, I made another whip going that route, I bought a cheap nut tightener with a similar spring loaded ball lock and cut it off, grinded the other end down then I bolted it and glued it to the hose end.

excellent, thanks so much. this will save me some moola :)

Being that i'm far from handy, are L brackets that small readily available or is that something that has to be custom made?

So I hit a snag with my friction-based follow focus. Some of my lenses require a lot of torque to turn the focus ring, especially my one-touch zooms, so I'm working on a geared version, which is 10 times harder to make.

I'll post pics in a couple weeks when it's done. :|

hey teddybear your work it´s amazing!, please can you explain more details about rails??, i don´t know how to attach camera 550d to the rails, if I need a base plate o how attach it. Can you explain or some high detail pics about?, thank you very much for your good work.

Edited: Sorry right now i found your rod rails post, you´re the man!! thx

why is this thing so hard to find. been scouring the net looking for one but have no idea what they are called. I know that whatever it is im looking for is 12mmx12mm but cant seem to find the correct item. Anyone out there care to point me in the right direction? thanks!

teddybear: I just saw that whip with the Jag35 end you made. Where did you get hold of that metallic part with the "ball end? And is it possible to get a "female" part for a DIY made wheel?
The quick release functionality would be a very nice addition to the kit.
