Well... it's halloween....

... and I've been told it's a good time to buy fog machines at from all places Walmart.

I'm gonna check to see if that's true tomorrow... hopefully they'll be on special.

But before I blow a bunch of dough... I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get a similar effect on the cheap.

I think a real fog effect is great for lighting effects and flashlight beams etc.

BTW I've done a search on this forum... can't seem to find anything on this subject.

Buying a fog machine from Wal-Mart *is* getting the effect on the cheap. You should be able to find something for, heck, maybe $39 max. I bought about 12 quarts of fog fluid from K-mart the week after halloween a few years ago, for a dollar a quart.

i got mine for 20 bucks at wally world, the fog juice is about 8 bucks... half a gallon. It's best to buy them around this time.. cuz it cheap. i dont think u can get cheaper than that...

The Wal-Mart fog machines are pretty good for the price. (less than $30). DIY solutions could be very dangerous. Maybe try Wal-Mart on line.

Thanks for the answers, guys.

Parting question....

Will the Walmart fog machine set off the fire alarms in my condo? I'm trying to get a studio going here...

Interesting note: I read somewere that the cast and crew of the X-files were starting to get health concerns because of the extensive use of fog. Apparently the devices they use is oil based or something. The Walmart machines are probably ok.

Yes, these smoke machines will set off smoke detectors and is a function of concentration. As for health concerns, it is smoke (well actually, it is a suspended particulate or something and not technicaly smoke), breathed into the lungs. Limiting exposure to absolute minimums is probably a good thing. We had an actress who claimed that the smoke triggered an asthma attack. She was more than her share of a "Drama Queen" and was very eager to finish for the day, so, I've taken the claim with a pinch of salt, but you never know.

AAAAWWW poop!

I was hoping smoke detectors detect smoke.... only.

There goes my plans to do some stock greenscreen/fog footage.

Appreciate the response.

Now I have to learn the particle system in 3D max...

If you get one, make sure you get extra fog fluid (it goes quick). They also have a remote for sale.

Well, you could temporarially disable the smoke detectors, but I would check your local housing regulations about that. Extra fog juice is important, twocik23 is right, it goes fast.
