DIY DVX100a Controller

Using the "Zoom Controller for the DVX100" Tutorial, I am building a controller for my DVX100a.

I found they have most of the parts at Radio Shack.

Heres what I bought:

"PSH BUT SWITCH R" (Momentary Switch)
"GP R/A 3/32 CON" (2.5mm Plug)
"JUMPER TEST COR" (Alligator Clips)

At the location I was at they had 10k and 50k Potentiometers. The Tutorial specified to use a 20k one, but considering they did not have one, I purchased the 50k pot to test. (It was 96¢. )

Total with tax was $17.97, my budget for this build is $20.

I still need to buy a box for the thing, but that can use the remaining $2.03.

It was pretty simple to get working, as per the tutorial, I connected up the ground to both the pot and button, the front to the button and the back to the pot. Nice and simple.

The plan was to hook it all up with the Alligator clips, make sure it works, if it does, then to solder it.

I turned one the camera to test, and I realized the record button works perfectly, but the pot does not. For some reason (I don't know a ton about electronic engineering), it will work to zoom out, but not in. I assume this is cause there is too much resistance (50k vs 20k) in the Potentiometer.

My plan is to go back and see if they can possible order me in a 20k one, or try and order one somewhere else.

I'll update this tread later when I get the new Potentiometer or a case or something.

EDIT: I forgot the mention, I already have some spare speaker wire that I plan to use rather then the alligator clips.

Soldering is a peice of piss, theres loads of videos on youtube that wil show you how to do it properly. Just make sure you get good equipment....

Well it might. Try it. For surface mount soldering you need a pretty small tip. For through hole mount soldering you can use pretty much anything, but the smaller the better. Also get a Mega Electronics flux aplicatior, makes it much easier. For soldering wires to wires, the easiest thing is a liquid solder pot, which is a heated bath of molten solder and you dip the wires into it.

Get an 18w antex or something with afew different sized tips and you will be able to solder most things.....

I could only find a 10k one this time.

I am planning on purchasing one from here. $0.55 for one.

I got a box this time from radio shack, but in my attempts to make a nice whole for the start/stop button, I made an ugly mess. Looks like the cost of this project is going up. Ouch.
