also, they sell HUGE blocks of wood at home depot. Most of them are much longer than what i need and is excessive. What would be the best size to get?

2" x 2" 1" x 2" ?

A good trick is to go to most big box home improvement stores and ask them for some scrap wood. Usually they're willing to part with it for super cheap, or even more likely, FREE!

width is 25cm x height (sticks included) 23cm, or about 10x9 inches.
