i recently built some china balls from compact fluorescent bulbs that i bought at home depot and nylon chinese lanterns that i bought from paperlanternstore.com for a short done for drama fest. i built them based on info that i got from this forum and from some other sources, so i wanted to show them in case anyone was interested in building some china balls for themselves. you can see pictures in the thread for our short, and i talk about how we built them:

i built two 30" lanterns and one 20". they're daylight balanced and cost about $80 for the big ones and $50 for the small ones. the large ones end up being the equivalent of 720 watts. we used them mainly as fill light for a daytime classroom scene. i think they worked pretty well. i found the lantern store here and a lot of good info, so thanks to everyone for the help.
